Spiritual Formation
Spiritual Formation
Spiritual Formation: Growing into maturity in Christ
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
Growing into His image
Living for His mission
“Without the intentional pursuit of spiritual formation, you forfeit the power and presence of Christ in your life and ministry.”
Spiritual formation is not for super Christians with competency
Spiritual formation is for faithful Christians with passion to pursue
Pursue Intimacy
Pursue Intimacy
And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Cultivate an enjoyment of the Lord with our whole being.
Psalm 84:1-12
Psalm 42:1-6
The Psalms are songs
We find confidence and boldness in the Lord as we deepen our love for Him.
Pursue Transformation
Pursue Transformation
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
The goal of spiritual formation is heart transformation
Behavior modification v. transformation
Pursue Accountability
Pursue Accountability
Accountability may be the most talked about and least practiced discipline among Christians.
“Cultivating dead-honest, authentic, sin-confronting, grace-centered accountability is extremely difficult in a world of superficiality and narcissism.”
Conclusion
Conclusion
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Discussion Questions
Discussion Questions
What are three words you would use to describe how you hope to practice spiritual formations?
Do you spend daily time in God’s Word and prayer? What’s one way you can deepen that time?
Have you given someone permission to hold you accountable? Have you been honest with that person?
What is one step you need to take toward greater spiritual accountability in your life?
