Bottomline: Our choices have consequences.

God called Abram (and lot) out of the great city of the time that was advanced in all things..expect faithfulness to God.

Our choices have consequences.

-Lot and Abram separates because there is no longer enough room
-Lot takes the nicer looking land and settles in Sodom
-Lot is captured by some Kings and ultimately rescued by Abraham send his men
-Abraham pleads for lot and his family
-Lot greets the angels
-Lot is saved and rescued by the angels
-Lots wife looks back
-Lot’s daughters get him drunk so he will in-pregnant them
2 Peter
The New International Version (Chapter 2)
he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)—9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials

Who we surround ourselves with matters.

The New International Version (Chapter 12)
The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. i3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him.

Our natural desires will often lead to destruction.

Lot chooses the nicest land....Lot chooses to be in a city that doesn’t really bring goodness to his family in terms of godliness
Matthew
The New International Version (Chapter 16)
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?

You can be around God without letting Him change you.

When God makes a way forward, keep going and don’t look back.

The New International Version (Chapter 19)
15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them. 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”

God saves us even when we don’t deserve it.

genesis
The New International Version (Chapter 19)
29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

God will often honor the righteousness of someway else at the benefit of you.

Romans
The New International Version (Chapter 5)
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand
The New International Version (Chapter 5)
8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

God will rescue you and make you righteous not because you deserve it but because He loves you.

God will rescue you even those who do not deserve it and will not change because of it.
And more often than I’d like to admit, I act like Lot did. I am indeed troubled by the sin I see around me in the world. But far too often, I end up responding to the sin I see around me the same way that Lot did—-by sinning myself. My guess is that many Christians share this experience.
