Second John warns against the same false teaching mentioned in 1 John. This letter, however, was addressed to “the elect lady and her children” (perhaps a local congregation), and focused on Christian hospitality. False teachers were using the kindness of Christians to gain influence within John’s congregations. John’s letter spoke of this danger and warned against opening one’s home to these destroyers of the faith. While the basic themes of 1 John—holding fast to truth, love, and obedience—are evident, there is the additional focus on what Christian hospitality is all about. Only when you find agreement on sound doctrine will you find meaningful fellowship. The letter was probably written by the apostle John in the late first century A.D.

If you don’t live for God, you live for the devil.
Love is one of God’s greatest commandments
Lone one another as we love ourselves
Do you know how to love yourself
Let truth affect how you live your life
Truth is a big theme
Life should be centered around truth, not fantasy
What is grace?
What is mercy?
Mercy and grace are closely related. While the terms have similar meanings, grace and mercy are not exactly the same. Mercy has to do with kindness and compassion; it is often spoken of in the context of God’s not punishing us as our sins deserve. Grace includes kindness and compassion, but also carries the idea of bestowing a gift or favor. It may help to view mercy as a subset of grace. In Scripture, mercy is often equated with a deliverance from judgment (e.g., Deuteronomy 4:30–31; 1 Timothy 1:13), and grace is always the extending of a blessing to the unworthy.
What is peace?
Connection between truth and love?
Truth and love in OT
Deceitfulness is a characteristic of antichrist behavior
Discuss verse 10 and 11

10 this teaching Refers to the “teaching of Christ” (2 John 9).

do not receive him into your house John encourages the Christian community to avoid those he calls the antichrists and their infectious heresy at all costs. The house here probably refers to the house church and thus John’s audience may be welcoming these antichrists in as teachers, when they should be refuted and rejected.

Discuss verse 12
