Wisdom v.6-8
Wisdom v.6-8
-we speak wisdom to the mature
-complete, those in Christ
-among the mature the Gospel is wisdom
Not of this age
-have you ever wondered why we are so arrogant to assume that because we have more knowledge readily available to us that we are much more intelligent than those who have gone before us
-the wisdom of this world will amount to nothing in the long run
God’s wisdom is a mystery
-not in the sense that it is convoluted
-but that until the we are given clarity through the power of the Spirit we cannot understand it
-and until God brought together the fullness of His plan in Christ the Gospel while pointed to and even proclaimed in shadow and type was not proclaimed in its fullness
Rulers
-they obviously did not know because if they did they would not have done what they did
-Jesus said forgive them they know not what they do
-this does not mean they are not accountable
-in some sense Jesus was saying do not refuse them forgiveness. It was not the unforgivable sin.
v.9-12 The Work of the Spirit
v.9-12 The Work of the Spirit
v.9 is a quotation from Isaiah 64
-John Macarthur says this verse is commonly misunderstood to refer to the glories of Heaven and is instead a reference to the wisdom of God which is why it is referenced here. God’s truth is not discoverable by eye or ear, through empirical methodologies, nor by the mind of mortal man
-Instead, this happens by power of the Spirit
-the Spirit reveals the things of God
-that is one of His main functional roles
-the comparison used here is that the spirit(perhaps consicience) is where the true man lies
Proverbs 20:27
The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.
-his inner person
-The Holy Spirit is therefore the only one who can reveal the truth of God
-not mean that the Spirit is God’s conscience
-dont take the comparison too far
v.12 We have received HIM
-the Spirit is the guarantee of our true redemption before God.
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
-His illumination is the fruit of our true salvation
v.13-16 He teaches, we speak
v.13-16 He teaches, we speak
-”interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual”
-this phrase is one that is not universally agreed upon
-probably similar idea as expressed in 2:1
-dont try to marry the world’s wisdom with God’s
-the natural man wont get it anyways so stop trying to make your message palatable to him
The spiritual man-the Christian is the only one who can make godly judgments truly.
-the ungodly cannot sit in judgment over the truth because they dont know it
-they cannot account for the reality of understanding that comes from Christ
-it is unknowable to them
Aphantasia example
-i dont know what it is to have mental imagery
-no one can explain it to me\
-if i was to wake up tomorrow with that ability it would change the way I do and understand a lot of things
-this is the idea here
Augustine or Anselm-”I believe in order to understand”
Illumination does not mean we have perfect knowledge but it means we have the ability to understand God’s truth rightly if we walk in faith with Him
