EXCEPTIONAL SACRIFICE

Hebrews 13:10–16 CSB
We have an altar from which those who worship at the tabernacle do not have a right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the most holy place by the high priest as a sin offering are burned outside the camp. Therefore, Jesus also suffered outside the gate, so that he might sanctify the people by his own blood. Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing his disgrace. For we do not have an enduring city here; instead, we seek the one to come. Therefore, through him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Don’t neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.

Main Idea: The sacrifice of Jesus is exceptional.

Key Question: Are you living like Jesus died for you?

1. The sacrifice of Jesus is one that nourishes us. (v. 10)

Hebrews 13:10 CSB
We have an altar from which those who worship at the tabernacle do not have a right to eat.
Exodus 29:14 CSB
But burn the bull’s flesh, its hide, and its waste outside the camp; it is a sin offering.
Psalm 34:8 CSB
Taste and see that the Lord is good. How happy is the person who takes refuge in him!

2. The sacrifice of Jesus turns the disgraceful into righteous. (v. 11-12)

Hebrews 13:11–12 CSB
For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the most holy place by the high priest as a sin offering are burned outside the camp. Therefore, Jesus also suffered outside the gate, so that he might sanctify the people by his own blood.
John 19:17–20 CSB
Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. Pilate also had a sign made and put on the cross. It said: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek.
Hebrews 9:12–14 CSB
he entered the most holy place once for all time, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow, sprinkling those who are defiled, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God?

3. The sacrifice of Jesus gives us a brand new identity. (v. 13)

Hebrews 13:13 CSB
Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing his disgrace.
1 Peter 4:14 CSB
If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
Galatians 3:28 CSB
There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus.

4. The sacrifice of Jesus promises hope. (v. 14)

Hebrews 13:14 CSB
For we do not have an enduring city here; instead, we seek the one to come.
Hebrews 11:10 CSB
For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Hebrews 11:16 CSB
But they now desire a better place—a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
Ephesians 2:19 CSB
So, then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household,

5. The sacrifice of Jesus demands our worship. (v. 15-16)

Hebrews 13:15–16 CSB
Therefore, through him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Don’t neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.
Romans 10:9–10 CSB
If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.
Romans 12:13 CSB
Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality.
Galatians 6:10 CSB
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith.
