Psalm 42-43

42 starts book 2 of the Psalms
42-49 are composed by the sons of Korah who was a levite leader of the songwriting guild. Facilitated worship.
42-43 are one psalm divided for liturgical purposes.

God’s Covenant With His People

Is not a unilateral affair
Bilateral arrangement
People don’t hesitate to call God into account for his responsibilities - the poet isn’t afraid of brutal honesty in the relationship.
Both parties freely participate - love given and received.

42

A crisis is happening in the life of this worship leader. He is stranded near Mount Hermon, unable to get back to Jerusalem.
As the deer…he has had one way of worshiping God his entire life - in the temple leading the people. He can’t do it and it is leaving him longing for God in that way like a deer thirsts for water.
Worship is a fundamental need and his soul is parched.
He is doubting God and himself - a liminal/wilderness experience.

He Remembers

How confident he was when singing with the people. It was an emotional high to lead the procession; exhilarating.
His discernment question: Then why am I depressed in my soul/inner self and restless? Why can’t I experience your presence now like then?
Adversaries voices nag him (obstacles) causing doubts - why have you forgotten me?
He goes to nature to to calm himself, pray and listen to God for the answer.
Lament
Grieve
Pour out his soul
he begins to see a new way; to think he can sing and pray.

In Wilderness Places

For the writer: in nature he enters worship not has he had known it but as honest dialogue with God and himself.
As we pour out our souls we remember
How confident we were
The emotional strength we had
Our longings/thirsts are activated.
Why downcast now? Why disturbed?
I will still (find a way) where I am, in my/our current situation to worship him.
The turn from I remember what it was like to I will remember him where I am not from where I used to be to worship God authentically out of our being which he breathed into us.
