Introduction
Genesis is divided into three sections:
Primeval History - written in poetry - So that people could remember the events that took place in the first 11 chapters. It demonstrates the significance these chapters have for us today.
Ancestral records - Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
Joseph narrative that has plot resolution
Our purpose this morning is to highlight the enormity of God - God is infinite.
Romans 11:33
Romans 11:33 KJV 1900
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
Psalms 139:6
Psalm 139:6 KJV 1900
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain unto it.
Job 36:26
Job 36:26 KJV 1900
Behold, God is great, and we know him not, Neither can the number of his years be searched out.
Deuteronomy 29:29
Deuteronomy 29:29 KJV 1900
The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
This morning, I want us to understand the infinite God through the revelation of His word as read in Genesis 1:1
In Genesis 1:1, God’s creation can be divided into 3 sections
Time
Space

Why did God create

God created time. Time started when God created the universe.
There are two periods of existence in which time does not exist:
Time did not exist before “In the beginning God”
Time will not exist after the Great White Throne Judgement
We call these periods eternity past and eternity future. Eternity is not beholden to time.
To better understand why God created time, we need to know what God did before time.
Before knowing what He did before time, we need some insight into who He is! Psalms 90:2
Psalm 90:2 KJV 1900
Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
Who God is can be divided into 2 parts:
Who He is in relationship to creation
Who He is in relationship to Himself
Who is He in relationship to creation? In The Gospel of John, Jesus gives 7 I AM Statements about who He is. The “I AM” statements connect back to one of the names of God. His most sacred name: Exodus 3:14
Exodus 3:14 KJV 1900
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
I am the Bread of Life
I am the Light of the world
I am the door
I am the Good Shepherd
I am the resurrection and life
I am the truth, life, and way
I am the true vine.
Deuteronomy 4:24
Deuteronomy 4:24 KJV 1900
For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
Who is He in relationship to Himself
Numbers 23:19
Numbers 23:19 KJV 1900
God is not a man, that he should lie; Neither the son of man, that he should repent: Hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
John 17:5
John 17:5 KJV 1900
And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
1 John 1:5
1 John 1:5 KJV 1900
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1 John 4:8
1 John 4:8 KJV 1900
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost is love.
Knowing this, helps us to understand what He did before time.
The Bible mentions two things that God did before time and both items reflect who He is - God is love
John 17:24
John 17:24 KJV 1900
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
1 Peter 1:19, 20
1 Peter 1:19 KJV 1900
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1 Peter 1:20 KJV 1900
Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
God created so that His creation could share in this amazing, divine love.

God created time

God decided how to divide time:
Day
Week
Year
God can intervene in time - This speaks of Him controlling time
Isaiah 38:8
Isaiah 38:8 KJV 1900
Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.
Joshua 10:12-13
Joshua 10:12–13 KJV 1900
Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; And thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, Until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, And hasted not to go down about a whole day.
God’s timing is always flawless - Galatians 4:4
Galatians 4:4 KJV 1900
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
A time established for the return of Jesus - Matthew 24:35-37
Matthew 24:35–37 KJV 1900
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
A time to die - Hebrews 9:27
Hebrews 9:27 KJV 1900
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
We need to redeem the time God has allowed us to have - Ephesians 5:16
Ephesians 5:16 KJV 1900
Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Here it means, to rescue or recover our time from waste; to improve it for great and important purposes.

Space

Not only did God create in the beginning, He also created the heaven. The Bible speaks of three heavens:
Where God lives
Universe
Our atmosphere
The context of Genesis 1:1 is the universe
God created the universe, a universe that continues to expand - Isaiah 40:22
Isaiah 40:22 KJV 1900
It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, And the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; That stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, And spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:
This was not always the idea
Yet Einstein realized that his theory predicted that a static Universe was unstable, and that it must expand or contract. Rather than accept this robust prediction, though, Einstein instead rejected it, assuming the Universe must be static. Instead, he introduced his cosmological constant to compensate, leading to what he later referred to as his "greatest blunder" in all of physics.
It was not until the twenties, with men like Hubble that astronomers or cosmologists discovered the universe was expanding
Yet the Bible mentions this around 700 B. C. - The reason the universe expands is God.
Think about our solar system
8 planets and 5 dwarf planets
hundreds of moons
Our moon is the fifth largest
100 billion stars
Job 26:7
Job 26:7 KJV 1900
He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, And hangeth the earth upon nothing.

Everything that has Mass has gravitational pull
Romans 8:22
Romans 8:22 KJV 1900
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
Matthew 23:35
Matthew 23:35 KJV 1900
That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
Luke 22:44
Luke 22:44 KJV 1900
And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Zechariah 14:4
Zechariah 14:4 KJV 1900
And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, Which is before Jerusalem on the east, And the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, And there shall be a very great valley; And half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, And half of it toward the south.
