Big Idea: Matthew was written to a Jewish audience to answer the question, “What happened to the kingdom?” As a descendant of David, Jesus inherits the Throne Covenant. As a descendant of Abraham, Jesus inherits the Land Covenant. His birth fulfilled Jewish prophecy. And God the Father spoke from Heaven and declared that Jesus is the Son of God. The named Him Jesus, because “He will save His people from their sins.”
Key Verses: 2 Sam 7:12-13, 16; Gen 12; Isa 7:14; Matt 3:16-17; Matt 4:4, 7, 10
INTRO: Going to see Top Gun in the 80s at the theater. Waiting for TG 2 for so long, that seemed to stop waiting for it.
This week we are going to be doing a survey of the book of Matthew in the Gospels. If you’ve been a camper with us for a few years, we started at the beginning with Creation and have walked thru the scriptures and have seen over and over that GOD LOVES TO BE TRUSTED.
In the Garden of Eden, He wanted Adam to trust Him. Eve was deceived to eat the fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil - if we know Good and Evil, then we don’t need to trust God about it, we know it for ourselves. They disobeyed, and were kicked out of the Garden and life became toilsome.
Out of the Garden, He wanted Adam’s children and descendants to TRUST HIM, but they followed Cain’s ways and became increasingly violent towards one another. God sent a FLOOD and all but 8 people were killed - the wages of sin is DEATH.
After the flood, He wanted Noah’s descendants to TRUST HIM, but they refused and settled together to build a tower and city FOR THEIR OWN NAME. God confused the languages and sent them out.
God chose Abraham to start a new nation, through which He was going to bless the WORLD. A nation faithful to God who serves Him by serving others.
Abraham wasn’t perfect, but HE LOVED GOD AND HE TRUSTED GOD. He promised them LAND - the Promise Land.
Gen 12, 15
But Abraham’s great-grandchildren acted wickedly and sold one of their own brothers into slavery
400 years later, God chose Moses to lead them to their home and start the nation. God gave them help, gave them the Law to explain His expectations.
Moses wasn’t perfect, but HE LOVED GOD and TRUSTED GOD. God told him that eventually, he’d raise up another prophet like him
Dt 18.15
But eventually, they rebelled, and instead of trusting GOD and being a light in the world, they wanted to be LIKE THE WORLD and have an earthly king. God gave them Saul.
But then God gave them David, a man after His own heart.
David wasn’t perfect, but HE LOVED GOD and TRUSTED GOD!
God promised David to raise up a descendant to sit on his throne.
2 Sam 7:12-13
