Intro:
This morning we are beginning a new series entitled Pneuma.
Throughout the month of June we are going to be learning about the Holy Spirit.
Who He is, How He speaks, His strength, and His power.
(Slide 1)
(Slide 2) Jesus said in Acts 1: 4-5 that His followers were to wait for the Promise of the father.
The passage says, “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.””
To be baptized with the Holy Spirit is an immersive experience and the result is powerful.
Like water baptism there is not a part of you that is not touched by the power of Holy Spirit.
Yet for many the idea of the Holy Spirit still seems to be a bit of a mystery.
For one many have great difficulty understanding what they have not seen.
The King James version of the bible adds a bit more mystery by using the phrase Holy Ghost.
In Luke 3:22 it says, “And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.””
This can leave you with several questions.
So, as we get started lets clear a few things up.
(Slide 3)
1) He is not merely some unseen power force.
2) The Holy Spirit is not an it.
3) He is not a scary ghost.
4) The Holy Spirit is not a bird.
(Slide 4) He is God.
The Best way to refer to Him is just Holy Spirit.
Holy is not a first name, but a description of the nature of the Spirit (Pure, set apart).
The Spirit is God and He is Holy.
He is just as much God as the son and the father.

Submit:
Its important to understand that the Holy Spirit didn’t just show up in the New Testament in the book of Acts.
The Holy Spirit was present at creation.
Genesis 1:1-2 (Slide 5)
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
The Holy Spirit moved upon people throughout the old testament.
(Slide 6)
Joseph: Genesis 41:37-38
“So the advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.
And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?””
Gideon: Judges 6:34
“But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon; then he blew the trumpet, and the Abiezrites gathered behind him.”
He would go on to deliver Israel from their enemies.
David: Psalm 51:11
“Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.”
Saul: 1 Samuel 10:6
“Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.”
Isaiah: Isaiah 63:10-11
“But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, And He fought against them.
Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people, saying: “Where is He who brought them up out of the sea With the shepherd of His flock?
Where is He who put His Holy Spirit within them,”
Jesus: We continue to see The Spirit at work in the New Testament when He descended upon Jesus.
Luke 3:22 (Slide 7)
“And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.””
Us: He came to dwell in us in Acts 2:1-4 (Slide 8)
“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Holy Spirit has been active and moving from the beginning.
He continues even until now.
Through this series we are going to learn what it is that He does.
Each week we will dig into a different aspect of how he moves.
I believe it is going to help you.

Where do we start?
(Slide 9)
Jesus said, The Holy Spirit will be with you, and will be in you.
John 14:15-27
John 14:15–27 (NKJV) (Slide 10-14)
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
“A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me.
Because I live, you will live also.
At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me.
And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.
“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.
Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
(Slide 15) You can see that the first step in knowing the Holy Spirit is to love God and keep His Word.
To do that God said we would need a helper!
Boy is that ever true!
He said that the Helper is the Spirit of Truth.
(Slide 16) John 16:13 takes it a little further.
“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”
(Slide 17) The truth of God’s word is revealed to us by Holy Spirit guide and lead us into all truth.
He will reveal whatever He hears from the Father to you, and will give you insight on things to come.
This is a beautiful promise from God!

Closing:
As I close I want you to see His leading in a practical sense.
Turn to Psalm 23. (Slide 18-19)
“A Psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want (He is a-tentative to us.
A shepherd knows his sheep).
He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me (the rod is a symbol of the Lords strength and protection, the staff is a symbol of the Lord guidance and lovingkindness).
