37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
The purpose of today sermon is show how the drinking of Baptism of Holy Ghost and the understanding of the Holy Scripture is what is needed the most.
Background- This passage takes place in Jerusalem during the Feast of the Tabernacles.
One of three feast ( the other were of Passover and Pentecost)
The feast of Tabernacles (Sukkah) also call the feast of Booths was done in remembrance of God’s provision for the people of Isreal during their wandering in the wilderness.
At the beginning of chapter 7 Jesus was asked by his disciple to attend the feast but Jesus (they wanted him to do some great works)
Jesus declined offer it was not yet his season
However he secretly went to the feast.
Our text take place during the last day of the feast- John 7:37
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
Our text is the second segment of Jesus’ teachings in this chapter, and it occurs on “the last day of the festival, the great day” (7:37).
According to the Mishnah (Sukkah), water ceremonies were an important part of this celebration.
A priest would draw water from the pool of Siloam with a golden pitcher, then carry it back to the temple and pour it into a silver bowl next to the altar, accompanied by musicians and choirs
. As the priest poured out the water he would pray to the Lord to send rain. In some rabbinic traditions, the water-drawing of Tabernacles is interpreted as the drawing of the Holy Spirit.
It is significant that on the last day of this festival, in which water is an important symbol, Jesus declares: “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink; and the one who believes in me — just as the scripture says — from that one’s innermost being will flow rivers of living water” (7:37-38).1
(The Greek word koilia as “heart,” but the word really means “stomach” or “belly” — the seat of emotions in Jewish thought.)
Jesus suggests that those who drink of the water he gives will themselves become sources of this living water.
This is similar to what he says to the Samaritan woman in chapter 4: “those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life” John 4:14
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
If someone were to you what is the critical need for mankind today; what would you say?
Well I looked it up to see what some scholars and experts say.
According to Abraham Maslow’s theory of hierarchy -
1)Physical needs -
2) Safety-
3) Belonging -
4) Esteem-
5)Self Actualization-
Jesus made it very clear that made most crucial need is to believe on Him as the scripture says- because if we do we will have access to rivers of living waters.
The words of Jesus, the Prophets, the Apostles, and all the Word in the Holy Scripture keeps us focused on the thing that needful. -The Word of God- Luke 10:42
Luke 10:39–42 (KJV 1900)
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus ; her thirst to KNOW God was the most PRINCIPLE, PRIMARY thing needed.
As we seek the Kingdom first all others thing will be added.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
We greatest need for mankind is to be empowered by the Holy Ghost

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
6. The Holy Spirit Gives Spiritual Gifts to Believers
6. The Holy Spirit Gives Spiritual Gifts to Believers
Attributes of the Holy Spirit such as wisdom, knowledge, and power are manifested in the lives of believers for the good of others. More gifts are listed in 1 Cor 12: 7-11
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
We need to Baptized in the Holy Ghost Acts 1: 4-5
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
