Big Idea of the Message: Bible study can be misunderstood as personal comfort and an intellectual pursuit. But we must allow the Bible to read us and train us in God’s ways.

Foundation

Today we live in some crazy times and they seem to be getting crazier everyday;
People have turned on each other in the ever favored concept of “Cancel Culture”;
However God, through His word, told us this would happen and that Christians would be targets - go back and read 2 Timothy 3 in it’s entirety to see this point;
As we jump into this narrative - Paul’s conversation with Timothy - Paul is letting Timothy know this, things are going to get ruff and deceivers are coming;
However Timothy has something to hold on to, which is his “Foundation” from childhood;
You too have the same “Foundation” however yours may not have come from similar sources as Timothy’s yet it is the same - Scripture;
Now just “having the Scriptures” is not enough, there has to be a convincing faith, so are you convinced of what the Scriptures say - is it settled completely in your heart;
Now there are obvious reasons why this settling is important but one sticks out to me as I read these words - “you can’t teach what you do not know”;
The teaching of the Torah (the first 5 book of the Bible) and the Hebrew Scriptures to the children was vital to the Jewish life and remember is was the only Bible even at this point;
So Timothy would have been very much aware of these writings because of his Grandmother (Lois) and mother (Eunice);
Paul tell Timothy that because of this “Foundation” he would be “wise for salvation”;
Scripture is God’s voice and has the power to change each person that is willing to have faith in it’s truth;
Job 28:28 “28 And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ””
Proverbs 9:10 “10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
Is your “Foundation” settled, transformed and renewed?

Source

Everything has a source, know that source may be energy that causes movement or resources that cause life, whatever the case there is a source at the beginning, a forest fire don’t just appear there had to be a spark;
The Scriptures are no different, there was a source which is God Himself;
Now is v. 16 talking about the Old Testament, the New Testament or the entirety of the Bible - the highest probability is the Old Testament (context - however this can be applied to either OT or NT);
God is the author and finisher of Scripture as His breathed word to man;
Which makes God the ultimate “Source”;
Now, as Paul points out, because God is the “Source” He directs His word for doctrine, reproof(reprimand), correction (the gentle side of reproof) and instruction;
Now there are many that will read God’s word and not be moved, inspired or changed - now that is not the fault of God but rather rejection by the person;
God is willing to complete His purpose in anyone willing to receive His Son.

What’s in it for me?

This is a good question?
Application Point: We will slow down and read the Bible humbly, by ourselves and within a community.
