We say it every week, because it is more important to remember and know why we look to the Bible, why we sit and listen to someone share from God’s word, our desire is to make our attitude that of Christ Jesus.
This is the goal … (statements of why knowing the goal is important)
One important thing Jesus told us is something He said, after resurrecting from the dead is he gave us a direction, he gave his first followers a direction
1 After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. 4 The guards were so shaken by fear of him that they became like dead men.
5 The angel told the women, “Don’t be afraid, because I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here. For he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there.’ Listen, I have told you.”
8 So, departing quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to tell his disciples the news. 9 Just then Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” They came up, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus told them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there.”
16 The eleven disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped, but some doubted. 18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Here is a mission, it is called the Great Commission, the great sending of those who follow Jesus.
Becoming a follower of God has two parts, the first part can make us a little self-obsessed
Love God
Love God
When we love God, God blesses us. When we love God we walk in the right ways.
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.
Love, obedience, benefit. Sometimes natural like not stealing gets you into less trouble and more peace in your life. Sometimes supernatural like tithing.
Yet only focusing on loving God can make us self-obsessed. Am I good enough today, am I perfect enough, do I know enough, God is so huge and great. We can forget that one God loves us enough to die for us and all of our efforts at being good do not earn more of His desire to love us. We also can forget that he is teaching us and loving us so that we can love others.
This Great Commission, Great Sending is one of a few times where the focus is on sharing this amazing transformation of finding our actual purpose in life to know and love God with others.
Let’s look at it closely
18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.
Jesus has all the authority
Jesus has all the authority
I think sometimes we think we forget Jesus won. If we are making our attitude that of Christ Jesus, than let’s remember He has the authority
We do not have to go out into the world afraid.
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.
These have been my own failings in life. I have at times worried what will happen to me if I go to certain places in town or in the world, but not out of wisdom just fear of everything I have seen on the news. I wish I could only say that the only thing keeping me out was fear of danger but I get afraid of what people will say to me, exclude me, think of me. There is a difference between cowardice and wisdom.
We are to have sound judgement - saying yeah I know the dangers and this is how God would have me minimize them. Yet out of love, we will go.
We will go and share the one who has all the authority Jesus. He is the savior of the World. He has the power to change everything. It is through His resurrection we are saved. This is why Jesus to go.
Jesus tells us to Go Make Disciples
Jesus tells us to Go Make Disciples
A disciple is a committed follower of a teacher. For us, as followers of Jesus, it means that we are committed to Jesus teachings. This is why our lives, our attitudes are to be like Jesus. This is something that also Jesus gifts us to do with others.
We believe that Jesus is the Savior, not us
We believe that Jesus is the Savior, not us
A mistake I have made, and I have observed many others make is believing that they have to fix the obvious problems in a person’s life so that a person can be saved, can be right with God.
11 For there will never cease to be poor people in the land; that is why I am commanding you, ‘Open your hand willingly to your poor and needy brother in your land.’
I once had a friend. The first friend I ever met and knew who was homeless and an alcoholic.
met him by the old bank of america
we connected often, he became part of the church, we were friends
I started to think that it was my job to teach and make everything in his life right. This is the opposite of walking with someone, alongside them as they take responsibility for their lives.
So many ways for him to think differently, act differently, live differently that one day at a red light, he jumped out of my car.
I have walked along side people and thought I was helping them but found myself being in places I shouldn’t be and finding all my worth in helping another person.
God’s desire is for me to worship Him and take joy in His actions, including How God is working delivering others. I found myself miserable, not making a disciple of Jesus but actually preventing a person from consequences.
Let us not be naive. but with sound judgement realize that Jesus saves people to follow Him in the midst of where they are at, whatever stage of life that is in. The most important thing we can do is share how our faith impacts our every day decisions.
including the fights we don’t have because Jesus tells us
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
the stuff we really care about and the stuff we don’t
19 “Don’t hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust or—worse!—stolen by burglars. 20 Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it’s safe from moth and rust and burglars. 21 It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.
Why we don’t worry
31 So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.
My friends today we are going to worship God and meet people near a homeless camp. We will be meeting others in the days, months and years to come. This church is about loving God and loving others by showing them how they too can love God and love others. In other words become disciples of Jesus
19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
We are to Go make disciples of all nations
We are to Go make disciples of all nations
Great news folks we live in the most diverse place in the united states
Here is something that is shocking, when we just stop right now. I will tell you that these three things taken in reverse I don’t want to do.
Talk with people I don’t really understand
Go anywhere
Teach people my faith
But I forget the authority!, I forget the blessings that come with knowing that all my built up fears, all my anxieties, all my worries, I can rest them in the authority of Jesus.
My friend Victor said something yesterday, that the homeless were his people. I hadn’t thought about those who are homeless as being a people, a nation, but in a way they are often spoken of as “they” or “the homeless” but we have names. Some given by parents and others given by ourselves. We have friends or family who were once without shelter. We may deal with addiction, illness, poverty or lack of friends as well.
We are to Baptize Them
We are to Baptize Them
We are to go and baptize, baptizing changes. First a person is to acknowledge that Jesus is who He says He is and commit publically and with action that they are followers of Jesus. But it also welcomes a person into us, the church family. We become responsible for encouraging each other in the faith.
Yet a baptism without the discipleship is too often just someone getting wet.
Church we need help baptizing and we need help discipling. If this sermon seems old to you, or been there done that then it is time for you to see me and say that you need to become a discipler.
If you’ve been baptized but haven’t had any training after that then you need to start planning for an introduction to the basics of Christianity coming in 2 weeks on Sundays at 9 am.
20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This is why we study the Bible, the why of having classes, this is why we talk with each other, this is why we work together,
Let me put it to you this way, if someone asked you
What did Jesus command me to do?
What did Jesus command me to do?
what will be your answer?
Some of you are freaking out right now because it is scary to be put on the spot. I want to tell you that I don’t do well being put on the spot. I once was interviewed in front of a big audience and forgot my anniversary date and how many years I had been married.
Teachers usually don’t recall from memory all they teach. They get something to jar their memory.
The Bible holds all that Jesus commanded us to do.
The Bible holds all that Jesus commanded us to do.
You can share with someone about the Bible.
If you can’t get it together and start following.
Their is a promise with telling people what Jesus commands
20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
