A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment. John Wooden
A good coach wants the best for us and from us.
So of course Jesus was a great coach. There is no one Jesus coached more than Peter.
Let’s learn from this player coach relationship.
1. A great coach sees the potential in us and calls us to it.
John 1:41–42 NIV
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).
Renaming from Simon to Peter which means rock. Simon was to emotional and impulsive to be worthy of such a name.
Remember: don’t wash my feet Lord. Okay wash my whole body.
Matthew 16:16–18 NIV
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Vs. 17 - Simon son of Jonah? I thought it was John? Was Jonah his mom? No Jonah is a male name. In the Greek language John and Jonah are the same name.
Vs. 17 - Jesus uses the name his parents gave him.
Vs. 18 - Then he says “you are Peter” calling him what He renamed him.
Vs. 18 - Jesus reveals his plans to reach and spread his redemptive plan for humanity.
Jesus sees our potential and calls us to become what we can not see in ourselves.
2. In tough times a good coach calms us down and refocuses us.
Matthew 14:22–24 NIV
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
Matthew 14:25–26 NIV
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
Matthew 14:27 NIV
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Take Courage
Matthew 14:28–29 NIV
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
Matthew 14:30–31 NIV
30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
2.1 seconds left in Duke's double-overtime game vs Kentucky in the regional final of 1992, when Krzyzewski entered his huddle and told his players to forget the one-point deficit and the inbound pass from the wrong end of the Spectrum floor.
"We're going to win this game," he said.
"Going into that huddle," Hurley said, "I thought our season was over, that it wasn't meant to be. But Coach really sold it to us. He made you believe."
3. A good coach will tell us the humbling truth, even when we don’t want to hear it.
Matthew 26:31–35 NIV
31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” 34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” 35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.
4. A good coach will let you go through the painful process.
Luke 22:31–32 NIV
31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
Rocked by this verse, the Holy Spirit, and a friend.
Vs. 31- To sift all of you. Sifting is unpleasant and undesirable but a necessary refining effect.
After wheat has been harvested, one of the steps in preparing it for use is to sift or thresh it. This is done to release the inedible chaff from the usable, edible grain.
There is something that needs to be pressed sifted out of you so you can be used for the purpose I made you for.
Vs. 32 - I prayed for you that your faith may not fail.
Vs. 32 - And when you have turned back - Implying he will turn away.
Vs. 32 - Strengthen your brothers. - I call you to lead!
A good coach reinstates a fallen player.
John 21:15–17 NIV
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.
Peter you are reinstated and ready to get back to work.
Top Gun 1986: After Mavericks co-pilot dies in a tragic crash, Maverick is reinstated to his Top Gun class. But he has a hard time getting back in the saddle. When Maverick is called to a real combat fight other pilots question his reinstatement and ability. Maverick finally remembers what his calling is. He reengages and become the hero.
Have you forgotten who you are in Jesus?
Have you not put your faith and trust in Jesus yet?
