HEBREWS CHAPTER 11 part 2
Last time together we looked at Abel, Enoch and Noah in the “Hall of Faith”
We will look at more of the heroes of faith tonight
Remember verse 6 here in chapter 11 helps us a lot
SLIDE 2
Hebrews 11:6 (NASB95)
6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
Anyone remember what impossible and seek means in the Greek?
SLIDE 3
impossible - (adunatos) powerless, weak, impotent
seek - (ekzeteo) pursue earnestly
SLIDE 4
Abel - faith worshipping
Enoch - faith walking
Noah - faith working
How can learning from these help our faith?
Is worshipping by faith pleasing to God? Is walking by faith pleasing to God? Is working or by faith pleasing to God?
We can find more of the details from these who have gone before us and apply this acts of fact into our walk with God.
Lets take a look at more heroes of the faith
Also since we have seen in Abel, Enoch and Noah and kinda labeled their faith, see if you can pick up and give a faith name for the next
SLIDE 5
Hebrews 11:8 (NASB95)
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.
SLIDE 6
Hebrews 11:9 (NASB95)
9 By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise;
SLIDE 7
Hebrews 11:10 (NASB95)
10 for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Who began out of the calling on Abraham’s life? Nation of Israel
Tower of babel in Genesis chapter 11.................God scatters the nations............then starts telling the genealogy to Abraham then immediately Genesis chapter 12…lets look at that.
SLIDE 8
Genesis 12:1 (NASB95)
1 Now the Lord said to Abram,
“Go forth from your country,
And from your relatives
And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;
SLIDE 9
Genesis 12:2 (NASB95)
2 And I will make you a great nation,
And I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And so you shall be a blessing;
SLIDE 10
Genesis 12:3 (NASB95)
3 And I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who curses you I will curse.
And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
For an encouragement of faith, does anything touch your heart in these 3 verses in Genesis?
Let’s read on in Hebrews about Abraham and now his wife Sarah
SLIDE 11
Hebrews 11:11 (NASB95)
11 By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.
SLIDE 12
Hebrews 11:12 (NASB95)
12 Therefore there was born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.
God promised Abraham and Sarah a son, how many years did they have to wait? 25 years
The nation of Israel came out of calling Abraham
Any idea what kind of faith type or faith name for this story of Abraham and Sarah? If not we will keep reading on n Hebrews, it will come out
Their son Isaac became the father of? Jacob
How was the nation built through Jacob? 12 sons Did those 12 come through a normal situation or how we would like to see things done?
SLIDE 13
Genesis 35:23–25 (NASB95)
23 the sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun;
24 the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;
25 and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maid: Dan and Naphtali;
SLIDE 14
Genesis 35:26–27 (NASB95)
26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.
27 Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre of Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.
Has anyone’s faith been encouraged in what we have discovered tonight? How
Let’s look on in Hebrews verses 13
SLIDE 15
Hebrews 11:13 (NASB95)
13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
After reading this verse we really can see “faith waiting”
All these died in faith / without receiving the promises
Have you ever thought you might die in faith without receiving a promise from God here on earth?
SLIDE 16
Hebrews 11:14–15 (NASB95)
14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.
15 And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return.
Here is what the “Bible Exposition” in Logos had to say
SLIDE 17
“Waiting is, for me, one of the most difficult disciplines of life. Yet true faith is able to wait for the fulfillment of God’s purposes in God’s time. But, while we are waiting, we must also be obeying.”
So what label of faith could we put on Abraham and Sarah’s story? “Faith Waiting”
So we have three points we could take from all these passages about Abraham’s faith
SLIDE 18
ABRAHAM - “Faith Waiting”
1) Abraham believed and obeyed when he did not know how God’s will would be accomplished
SLIDE 19
ABRAHAM - “Faith Waiting”
1) Abraham believed and obeyed when he did not know how God’s will would be accomplished
2) Abraham believed and obeyed God when he did not know when God would fulfill His
promises
SLIDE 20
ABRAHAM - “Faith Waiting”
1) Abraham believed and obeyed when he did not know how God’s will would be accomplished
2) Abraham believed and obeyed God when he did not know when God would fulfill His
promises
3) Unbelief asks, “How can this be?” / Faith asks, “How shall this be?”
As we look at this next verse in Hebrews we can be encouraged and learn what focus we should keep in believing God through something, what we look forward or into
SLIDE 21
Hebrews 11:16 (NASB95)
16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.
Now as we finish up with these last 6 verses, notice how obeying through believing is shown through Abraham Isaac Jacob and Joseph. By believing they obeyed by carrying out an act of faith.
SLIDE 22
Hebrews 11:17–18 (NASB95)
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son;
18 it was he to whom it was said, “In Isaac your descendants shall be called.”
SLIDE 23
Hebrews 11:19 (NASB95)
19 He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type.
SLIDE 24
Hebrews 11:20–21 (NASB95)
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even regarding things to come.
21 By faith Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.
SLIDE 25
Hebrews 11:22 (NASB95)
22 By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel, and gave orders concerning his bones.
