Matthew 13
What is a Parable? It is a made up story that gives us a truth that we need to know. Jesus gave many parables but we are going to look at the parable of the sower.
Jesus gives us two reasons that he gives the parables here in Matthew 13. First Jesus speaks in parables so that those who believe will know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven. Second reason for the parables is that they would hide the truth from those who do not believe.
before we get really into our lesson we must know some context. Does anyone know who wrote Matthew? Mathew is writing to Jewish Christians that would know of the old testament and the themes that went along. Matthew is presenting Jesus as the promised Messiah of the old testament.
Before we get to this section we see a lot of crazy stuff happening. A guy named John the baptist baptises Jesus then John is arrested, Jesus is opposed by the pharisees and they accuse him of violating the sabbath, Jesus heals a man and then the Pharisees wanted to kill Jesus because of it Then We see Jesus cast out a demon. Over and over the pharisees continue to be thick headed and hard hearted to the pharisees because they continued to reject the miracles that Jesus was given. They asked for another miracle and jesus tells them that he will give them the sign of Jonah where he would die and in three days be resurrected.
Jesus is constantly rejected, however, when we get to Matthew 13 we see a change in the way that Jesus is teaching, but the truth is still the same. God’s kingdom does not look the way we want it to look, but God’s kingdom is according to his plan.

The Purpose
Remember the purpose of the parables? so that we will be able to understand the truths of the kingdom of heaven (Jesus Death and resurrection for our sins).
The Explanation
We sow the seed of the word of God, no matter where we go, who we talk to, or what we do. We talk about Jesus. We cannot change how people will respond but what we can do is proclaim the kingdom of Jesus to all.
What do you want out of this week?
Do you think that you are the soil that is will not hear? or do you think that you are the good soil that is ready to hear the words and understand?
