Intro: Who’s ready to go Fishing??? Camp is upon us/
First who likes fishing???? Who Does Not??
Raoul: A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work!
Maybe it is just because ....bad experience of not catching anything
If you are unexperienced fisherman, then you want to make sure you go with someone who knows how to catch fish.
The sport of fishing can be really boring especially when you do not catch anything.
Someone that knows where the fish are, has the right tackle, and the right bait.
What is in your Tackle-box?
Lures, hooks? You always got to have plenty of gear, never know what the secret bait might be.
The sport of fishing can be really boring especially when you do not catch anything.
Fishing for men is similar to fishing for fish, you need to have a plan, the right tackle you see we need to have a tackle box ready with the right bait: God Word.
Jesus teaches us how to go fishing!
Matthew 4:19 “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Mark 1:17 “Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.”
In both cases we see the disciples forsook their nets, boat jobs, family, way of life and immediately follow Jesus.
I want to look at Lukes account Luke 5:1-11
Nobody wants to get skunked because they were not prepared. Jesus teaches us how to not get skunked.
First, Jesus goes fishing for men (Luke 5:1-3A).
Second, Jesus takes fishermen fishing (Luke5:3B-7).
Finally, Jesus teaches fishermen how to catch (Luke 5:8-11).
Thesis: Anybody can go fishing but few can go catching, because catching requires experience, patience, knowledge and preparedness.
II. Jesus goes fishing for men (Luke 5:1-3A).
a. He stood by the lake (Luke 5:1).
b. He saw fishing boats (Luke 5:2).
c. He asked Simon to go away from Shore (Luke 5:3A.
i. Jesus was looking and saw a opportunity to teach.
Simon means Listen; he listens to Jesus.
Now these men already knew Jesus, we know because a qualification of an apostle was :
Acts 1:22 They had to be a witness of baptism by John, and witness of Resurrection.
Jesus had the people pressing on Him, as Gospel preachers you can not do all the work of the church alone, need to make sure you are always training others to do the work as well to take a burden off of you.
Jesus finds fishermen, he can see there dedication, they fished all night vs 5 and are still up cleaning nets. Jeusu is about to shift that kind of dedication to the work of the Kingdom.
d. We need to get in our communities and look for opportunities to teach people.
These people already knew Jesus and He was making himself know. Make sure you are getting out and not staying in a office all day long.
Jesus was the master at finding people and being able to relate to them? We must get to know our audience.
III. Jesus takes Fishermen fishing (Luke5:3B-7).
a. He sat and taught (Luke 5:3B).
b. He has them put nets in water (Luke 5:4).
i. Simon refers to Jesus as master and listens.
c. They caught a great multitude (Luke 5:6).
i. Jesus did not create the fish, that was done at creation. The fish obey Him. Miracle
d. They called for help (Luke 5:7).
i. They filled both ships and they began to sink
IV. Jesus teaches fishermen how to catch (Luke 5:8-11).
a. Simon fell to his knees in fear (Luke 5:8).
Depart from me; for I am a sinful man!!
b. Jesus tells them Fear not, from now on you shalt catch men(Luke 5:10).
i. Most people don’t want to go fishing because you may not catch anything.
ii. Jesus tells them they will catch.
iii. They just witnessed catching fish. They are professional fishermen!
c. They for sook all and followed Jesus (Luke 5:11).
i. They leave their huge fortune of fish they just caught.
ii. They leave their Jobs, boats, family.
d. We willing to forsake everything for Jesus and follow him? (Luke 9:23)
V. Conclusion: Whats in your tackle box? We are with out excuse to say I just didn't know enough to evangelize, our brethren have made evangelism as simple as 3 studies.
With the right attitude, a little knowledge, and some patience we can start catching men. We will not be successful every day, even guides get skunked sometime.
But if we keep the right attitude, we to can catch.
We see where Jesus not only catches men, but these will be some of his apostles. Peter, James, and John here would also be the ones who went with Jesus to Mt Transfiguration and saw Moses ad Elijah.
Jesus took fisherman which are undereducated men and made them great apostles, we should never judge the soil in evangelism, who knows the next Bible study you have may be with the new Gus Nichols, or McGarvey, or mike vestal.
First, Jesus goes fishing for men.
Second, Jesus takes fishermen fishing .
Finally, Jesus teaches fishermen how to catch.
Are you ready to go fishing or do you want to go catching, the secret bait is Jesus and His Word.
