Need:
We need to hear this because worship is something that we often get wrong
I mean, what’s the first thing that you think of when you hear the word “worship?”
If you’re anything like me, you probably thought about worship music
And there’s a good reason for that; we call it “worship,” and we call Sam our “worship director”
But when we just think of worship as “music” and as nothing else, we’re really missing something beautiful about one of the five purposes of the church.
Music is a means of worship. Not the only means, but a valid and effective one
But we need to broaden our minds about what worship really is
When the worship team comes up here and plays a song, so much more is happening than just a mini concert
We are responding to the soveriegn God of the universe; it is a really, really big deal
And that time of worship isn’t limited to the music set; it continues on as we open God’s word, and as we are challenging to live a lifestyle that reflects our worship of Him.
My prayer is that, after looking at this text in Isaiah 6:1-8, we will be able to recapture some of that.
Body
The Big Idea: Worship is a respond
The Question: What is worship a response to?
God’s holiness
Isaiah 6:1–3 (NLT)
It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. They were calling out to each other,
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies!
The whole earth is filled with his glory!”
Explanation:
This is the call of the prophet Isaiah
And this happens the year that King Uzziah died
Why is that something that we should care about? Who was King Uzziah?
He was Israel’s King for 52 years, and He was the best king since Solomon
He was a worshipper of God. But one time, he got it wrong when it came to worship.
He went into the temple to burn incense. Which, we hear that and we’re like “yeah; he did some Old Testament stuff…”
But what he did was actually in direct violation of the Law; only Levitical priests were allowed to go in and burn incense
After this, the dude litterally get’s CANCELLED and isn’t even allowed to go into the temple anymore!
He was banished from the worship community because he worshipped wrong!
What did he get wrong exactly? We’ll talk about that a little more as we go on.
The next thing that we see that really catches our attention are the “seraphim”
Who are these guys?
This is litterally the only place in the Bible that they are mentioned
The word literally means “fiery ones”
This explains why we have gotten some of the depictions of them that we have over the years.
Let’s take a look at a few, shall we?
Here’s an ancient painting
With this one you do see him covering his feet like it says in the text, but he’s not covering his face
And, no offense, but I wish that this depiction of its face was being covered, you know what I mean?
Alright, let’s look at another one
This one comes from our friends over at Zonderkids, so yeah… this one’s kid friendly, I guess
Thankfully the face is covered this time, but I don’t really see any fire
Anyways, you get the gist of what these guys might look like
Why is it that they cover their face, by the way? Why is that an important detail?
