Psalm 130

a psalm of tremendous hope where there was despair
a psalm where man cannot do but God can
a psalm of great faithfulness of the Lord
a psalm declaring our fulsome response

A Cry to the Lord

Psalm 130:1–2 NIV
Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
the bible is consistent in its narrative
man needs the saving grace of God
we simply cannot get ourselves out of our troubles
we find ourselves in despair, in trouble, in conflict
some are huge, others not so much - we still all need to find salvation
Our Response
I cry to you, my cry for mercy
sooner or later we all know that we need mercy
the weight of sin and the surety of death is upon us all
so under that conviction, we reach out hoping God will respond
we know that Jesus is always attentive
Hebrews 13:5  God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Forgiveness is Available

Psalm 130:3–4 NIV
If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you.
the Lord is Lord God Almighty - none can stand before him in their sin
we cannot stand in our sin before him
But with you there is forgiveness
in Jesus we have been set free, we have our sin forgiven, death no longer rules over us
so we have this reverence - a holy awe for his boundless love to us
we have been redeemed so we will serve him

Hope in the Lord

Psalm 130:5–6 NIV
I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.
our response is to wait for the Lord
we do not push, we do not cajole him for he is Lord
coming out of our forgiven and his grace bestowed upon us
we know that his word is true and faithful
2 Timothy 2:13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

Unfailing Love

Psalm 130:7–8 NIV
Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.
the individual you and me have been
in the times of the OT, the nation of Israel is a favoured son
the rewards of mercy and love are applicable to the nation as to the individual
God is big enough to save nations - Australia is a cinch
