Opening Story:

There is nothing greater as a parent than coming home to your kids waiting at the door for you.
Why?
They love you and more importantly they know that you love them. They missed you, they want to share their day with you, they want to spend time with you.
Revelation 3:14–22 CSB
14 “Write to the angel of the church in Laodicea: Thus says the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the originator of God’s creation: 15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, ‘I’m rich; I have become wealthy and need nothing,’ and you don’t realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I advise you to buy from me gold refined in the fire so that you may be rich, white clothes so that you may be dressed and your shameful nakedness not be exposed, and ointment to spread on your eyes so that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be zealous and repent. 20 See! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21 “To the one who conquers I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 “Let anyone who has ears to hear listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Revelation 3:14 (CSB)
14 “Write to the angel of the church in Laodicea: Thus says the Amen (a transliteration of the Hebrew word for “truth”), the faithful and true witness, the originator of God’s creation:
Laodicea was known for its banking, medical, and clothing industries.
the only place in Scripture where Amen is a proper name
Being the originator of God’s creation means Jesus was the person of the Trinity who was the agent of creation (Jn 1:3)
faithful and true witness: reveals that Jesus Christ alone will reveal all and tell all
Revelation 3:15–16 CSB
15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth.
Where Laodicea was located they had to use aqueducts to get there water. They would have water from the mountains that was ice cold or water from the springs steaming hot, but when it arrived they both were lukewarm. Nobody likes lukewarm.
Revelation 3:17–19 CSB
17 For you say, ‘I’m rich; I have become wealthy and need nothing,’ and you don’t realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I advise you to buy from me gold refined in the fire so that you may be rich, white clothes so that you may be dressed and your shameful nakedness not be exposed, and ointment to spread on your eyes so that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be zealous and repent.
I am rich - thanks to its banking industry, Laodicea was a wealthy city and even the church was convinced that it was self-sufficient.
gold refined by fire - This is talking about true wealth - a metaphor for removing sin
eye salve - the medical school was known for producing eye salve but Christ cures our spiritul blindness.
Revelation 3:20 CSB
20 See! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
The Lord has been pushed outside of the church. Out of there lives and wanted to reenter through their repentance.
Think hard about this. Christ left heaven, born in a barn or cave. Killed by crucifixion. He literally moved heaven and hell to get to you but He stops at your hearts door and knocks.
