Introduction: Story-”Follow Christ”
“I once read the story of a young woman who wanted to go to college, but her heart sank when she read the question on the application that asked, “Are you a leader?” Being both honest and conscientious, she wrote, “No,” and returned the application, expecting the worst. To her surprise, she received this letter from the college: “Dear Applicant: A study of the application forms reveals that this year our college will have 1,452 new leaders. We are accepting you because we feel it is imperative that they have at least one follower.”
There are times for all of us to lead in various roles and ways in our lives, but sometimes we become so focused on leadership that we forget our first responsibility is to be followers of Jesus Christ. The first command that He gave to His disciples was to follow Him, and the same is true for us. There is no way to be a successful, victorious Christian without first walking in the footsteps of Jesus.”
“Authority” by 116 Clique
“If you can't follow you can't never lead And you don't run a thing till you runnin' to the King And who I follow's who they follow when they follow me A real man bows down to authority”
Conclusion of this series: “The church community makes disciples. We make disciples by sharing the gospel message and teaching what it means to be a disciple.”
Matthew 28:16–20 CSB
The eleven disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but some doubted. Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Romans 12:9–21 CSB
Let love be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good. Love one another deeply as brothers and sisters. Take the lead in honoring one another. Do not lack diligence in zeal; be fervent in the Spirit; serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer. Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud; instead, associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Give careful thought to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes. If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for God’s wrath, because it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord. But If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink. For in so doing you will be heaping fiery coals on his head. Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.
(Prayer)
Sharing The Gospel:
Applaud Craig for teaching about the purpose of the church is to reach the lost.
Personal Challenge: “Check your attitude when the gospel message is being presented.”
“Again, the church creates disciples by sharing the gospel message and then teaches those who proclaim to be Christians what it means to live like a disciple for Jesus Christ.”
Christian Ethics 101:
1.) Sincere Love: (Romans 12:9)
Romans 12:9 CSB
Let love be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good.
Hypocrisy: To pretend to be something you aren’t.
(Example of Unsincere Love- A Backstabber: Someone who says hurtful things about you when you aren’t there to defend yourself. AKA, Gossip)
2.) Showing Honor: (Romans 12:10)
Romans 12:10 CSB
Love one another deeply as brothers and sisters. Take the lead in honoring one another.
Honor = Respect = Appreciation
Romans 13:7 CSB
Pay your obligations to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes, tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect, and honor to those you owe honor.
Philippians 2:3 CSB
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.
(Personal Example: The Leadership Team)
3.) Be Diligent and Fervent: Romans 12:11
Romans 12:11 CSB
Do not lack diligence in zeal; be fervent in the Spirit; serve the Lord.
Be EXCITED!!
Why should I be excited being a disciple for Jesus Christ?
You are saved by the love, grace, and mercy of Jesus Christ!
You have a guaranteed promise of eternal salvation in Jesus Christ!
You have the opportunity on a daily basis to worship and be in relationship with almighty God!
You no longer shackled by your sin and shame, but have freedom in Jesus Christ!
Your identity is not based on what the world says, but what Jesus says!
You get to be surrounded by others who have the same beliefs, values, and journey!
You get to share the hope of Jesus Christ with others!
4.) Have Hope, Be Patient, and Pray: Romans 12:12
Romans 12:12 CSB
Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer.
“These three things aren’t conditioned based on what is happening in your life.”
Hebrews 10:32–36 CSB
Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way. For you sympathized with the prisoners and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, because you know that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession. So don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you need endurance, so that after you have done God’s will, you may receive what was promised.
“Hope, patience, and prayer provide the endurance you need to keep going in your journey for the Lord Jesus Christ.”
5.) Be Hospitable:( Romans 12:13)
Romans 12:13 CSB
Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality.
Hospitality: Showing kindness in welcoming strangers or guests.
(Uplift The Buehler Family and the express the important of being hospitable within the church.)
6.) Bless and Do Not Curse Those Who Persecute You: (Romans 12:14)
Romans 12:14 CSB
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
“This and verse 17, which we will get to shortly, are probably the two hardest ethics to live by. You can’t live out these ethics without Christ, and it’s especially true when it comes to this!”
1 Timothy 6:13–14 CSB
In the presence of God, who gives life to all, and of Christ Jesus, who gave a good confession before Pontius Pilate, I charge you to keep this command without fault or failure until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
“Let the haters and hate.”
7.) Rejoice and Weep: (Romans 12:15)
Romans 12:15 CSB
Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.
Job 30:25 CSB
Have I not wept for those who have fallen on hard times? Has my soul not grieved for the needy?
Hebrews 13:3 CSB
Remember those in prison, as though you were in prison with them, and the mistreated, as though you yourselves were suffering bodily.
8.) Live in Harmony and Humility:
Harmony in greek = to think thus v. — to dispose the mind in a certain way.
(Personal Reflection: “What is your mindset of everyone in this room?)
“If you think you are better then everyone in this room, you are dealing with a pride issue and pride causes division.”
(Example: The Fall of Lucifer)
9.) Don’t Repay Evil, Live In Peace: (Romans 12:17-21)
Romans 12:17–21 CSB
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Give careful thought to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes. If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for God’s wrath, because it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord. But If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink. For in so doing you will be heaping fiery coals on his head. Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.
Conclusion: “Abigail Adams On Racism”
“When John Adams, our second president, was living in Philadelphia he and Abigail befriended a boy of African descent named James Prince. The local school refused to allow him to attend. Mrs. Adams demanded that the boy be allowed to attend. She said, “Is this the Christian principle of doing unto others as we would have others do to us? I hope that we shall all go to Heaven together!”
Christian ethics teaches us what it means to live like a follower of Jesus Christ. These aren’t optional if you call yourself a disciple for Jesus Christ.
We as the church have a mission and a vision. The mission is to share the gospel and make disciples, the mission is to help grow disciples. Welcome to the Church Community.
