Promise of John:
Jesus speaking of it
Promise of John - Promise of Jesus
Fulfilled
This i the fulfilment of the promise
When was this to happen?
After repentance!
The word after means an event subsequent to another event!
First the working of the Holy Spirit “with” the unbeliever
Second the Holy Spirit working “in” the believer
Third working of the Holy Spirit “upon”
The Hebrew word pour in Joel means “to lavishly expend with restraint” and the Hebrew word for on is a term signifying relationship of one object to another with the focus of the object being in the middle or in the inner area!”
Kittle describes it as “a marker of the experience, implying a superior force of person is upon the experiencer!”
Again indicating that this event is and “experience” in the life of the believer
Then the Holy Spirit working “through” the believer!
Three distinct works of the Holy Spirit
We see the word Filled used interchangeably with the word “baptism” of the Holy Spirt and gift of the Holy Spirit
It is the this release of the power of the Holy Spirit subsequent to the “born Again” experience that seems to be a great divider of the people of God!
As always, we just need to follow the Word of God and not apply man’s interpretation of the experience!
Generally speaking God mean what He says!
We don’t interpret “Thous shall ned steal” as “Thou shall not steal in certain cases!”
The same applies here!
The obvious meaning of the text is the acceptable one!
Don’t read into the Scriptures!
So did God or did He not give us a clear understanding of this experience?
Yes!
The baptism of the Holy Spirit was subsequent to the infilling of the Holy Spirit
We discussed the argument about John 20 :22
Did anything happen?
It was only symbolic action by Jesus
NO WAY!
This was the event in which the Holy Spirit was now “in” the disciples!
We can not say “nothing happened!”
The promise by Jesus came AFTER this event!
They were “born again” by the Spirit
A spiritual birth must take place!
I like the NLT of the verse
Spiritual birth brings vision into the spiritual world
So let’s continue
after Acts 2 Peter preached and people were convicted
We see the three fold working of the Holy Spirit
Repent, Be baptised, Ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit!
Phillip in Chapter 8
Preaching - they believed and baptized
Now those at Jeruslaem
Believing - Baptized but not yet received
Now the Holy Spirit is residing in them!
They sent Peter & John so they might receive!
Who to receive?
The believers!
Not just the Apostles!
Notice the Holy Spirit had not yet come “hapee” Upon them!
There was visible and audible evidence!
Simon wanted to do the same!
There was clear evidence of the manifestation
Saul heading to Damascus to arrest those calling on the name of the Lord
His conversion - “Lord”
Paul led to Damascus - Straight street
Ananias baptizes Saul
Again we see Pauls filling subsequent to and separate from his conversion
Acts chapter 10 Peter called to Caesarea and sheared the truth of Christ
The Holy Spirit fell “hepi” them and they were surprised
Peter give a defense about the event - All I was doing was speaking!
Acts chapter 19 Paul in Ephesus - Not the first
Apollos preaching in Ephesus
Something was missing!
Paul seeks to find out what is wrong here!
What have we seen?
Variety of methods and experiences
2 - seated and suddenly
8 - imparted by laying on of hands by Paul & John
9 - Imparted to Paul by Ananias, a common believer!
- Healing occured but no record of other phenomena but we do know that he did use the gifts of the Holy Spirit for he said “I speak in tongues more than all of you!”
In Samaria - Peter & John no listed events but why then did Simon seek the power
Paul - healed from blindness
10 - Peter while he was speaking didn’t have chance to lay hands on them
19 - Laid hands on them tongues and prophecy
No identical experiences
We should not pattern our experience after someone else
Finney described these waves of liquid love that just kept flowing over and over him, until he had to shout out to God crying, "God, stop!
I cannot take any more."
Now that is wonderful, and that is glorious, and that is how Finney experienced the baptism with the Holy Spirit.
But it does not mean that is the way you are going to experience it or that I am going to experience it.
Don’t pursue someone else's experience!
We do not put pur trust in experiences but rather the Word of God
God deals with us according to our nature and temperaments
Don’t look for a particular experience - the experience is not important but the promise is!
And just open your heart.
As Peter was preaching in the house of Cornelius, the hearts of the people were opened by the Spirit.
The Spirit was bearing witness of the truth to their hearts.
And as their hearts were opened by faith, they were receiving the Word of God.
And as they were receiving the Word, the Holy Spirit just came upon them and it was beautiful
