Leading through Team Building
The Holy Spirit equips leaders to do what needs to be done, however the question is, what does leadership look like if the goal is to build the kingdom? What is the kingdom method for building?
Bishop Jakes said; “For every task/goal there is a team.”
I submit and Scripture supports that leadership reflected in the New Covenant is build by team building. Rather the team is called the Body or the Church, or the apostles the objective of Heaven is not achieved apart from learn both the power and the leverage of team building.
John Maxwell said; “ Teams are collections of individuals, so the leadership challenge is to find the right combination of motivating factors to make a team successful.
In this course we will explore together:
The Dysfunctions of Team Building
The Prioritization of laying a foundation to Build a Team
The Characteristics that Round-out a Team
As leaders, we have a choice, we either can build around us, or build those around us. Jesus chose the latter, being fully God and fully man, He did not need the disciples, but in order for the ministry to live beyond His physical contribution, He reduce Himself so the mission of His ministry would remain.
Therefore, do not despise small beginnings, for in team building you have to focus on them!
Session I
Dysfunctions of Team Building
“Developing good, functional teams doesn’t require any special conceptual breakthroughs, but it does call for ‘courage and persistence’.” ~ Patrick Lencioni
Session II
The Prioritization of laying a foundation for Team Building
“You want your achievements to add up, but that takes subtraction, not addition. You need to be doing fewer things for more effect instead of doing more things with side effects.” ~ Gary Keller
Session III
Characteristics that Round-out a Team
There are patterns in how people interpret the world and manage their emotions. Understanding these patterns equip us to work well with others, in the achievement of common goals.
The outline above can be a 3 or 6 week course. With each session offered as a 45 minute teaching w/ 10 min of take away. Or two 40 minute teaching w/ 15 minute take away.
Should their be an interest beyond, to dive deeper additional material (teaching / coaching) for a cost, as it becomes more personalized towards the leader and their team.
Session I: The Leader Who Builds Teams.
If we’re going to build effective team, it’s important to first build, the team builder. Now this is not a leadership focus session, however we must spend a moment looking at the kind of leadership required to build teams.
“For every task, there is a team!” ~TD Jakes
Here are a couple of things for your consideration. Constructing the kind of teams needed for the tasks at hand demands different skill development then being the kind of leader everyone comes too.
Scripture is silent on the developmental years of Christ the ages between 12 and 30.
What we see is at the age of 12, Luke 2:41-52, before the silent years, the text says, His parents after returning home from the Feast of the Passover “supposing him to be in the group, went a day’s journey…” before noticing He was not with them. In stead of being with group, boy Jesus is found three days later in the temple, sitting among the teachers engaging in such away that they “were amazed at his understanding.
Let’s pause for a moment…
Are you the kind of leader who separates yourself from the group by causing others to marvel at you?
What we see about “boy Jesus” is He clearly was that kind, at that time.
After this episode, Scripture goes silent, it goes dark concerning Jesus for the next 18 years! When we see Him again, its at the meeting of He and John the Baptist. Where here going forward, Jesus begins His ministry by building a team! He still has that draw, but what we witness in the development of the ministry the draw is partnered with team building.
I can imagine that the teachers of the law when Jesus was a boy, were not only impressed with Him, but there inquiry of Him left an impression on Him. One in which could’ve contributed to who we see He has become when He returns back to the scene.
Before His public ministry commences He’s a one-man show/child, but immediately upon His return He is laser focused on gathering, drawing, building a team.
What were some of the things that could’ve contributed to the transformation of His leadership? What does it take to go from being a solo act leader, to a team player leader? Here are some suggestions.
One Thing Takeaways
Team Building takes singular focus. In his book One Thing author and co-founder of Keller Williams Realty says the biggest obstacle to achieving our goals is multitasking. Superior success comes from extraordinary focus on One Thing…
I suggest leaders who build teams must focus singularly on doing so. We can do so by the following.
Align your purpose with your Team in mind.
This directs your priorities and tells you how to spend your time.
Trade your to-do list in for a short success list. What are some small easy wins?
From this list, block out time for what is truly important for achieving that success.
Learn to say NO, and accept the chaos that accompanies any pursuit of greatness.
Remembering every Yes, is a No to something else, disciple your responses to things and people based on how it effects the teams success.
Cultivate an environment that supports your team!
Discipline yourself to stay away from anything, that does not duplicate what you desire to see. Then do only that which duplicates, if something needs to be done that only you can do, then maybe it does not need to be done!
Our teams are often a reflection or outgrowth of ourselves. And whatever disciplines we have personally employed, often become the standard of measurement we use. Therefore lest spend the reminder of our time today, looking at the above with respect to the application of team building.
Alignment - is to put things in proper order. When Aligning our purpose in Team Building, its imperative that we eliminate the thought that “Everything matters equally”
The shortest distance between two points is called displacement.
What is displacement?
In the field of physics, we can define displacement as the shortest distance from a starting point to an ending point. Displacement is a vector quantity. In simple terms, displacement is described as the overall change in the position of an object.
In team building we must anticipate displacement as we move from one thing to the next. Which by nature cause organization charting organic. Therefore eliminating any and all equality before Engagment. In other words, allow room for adjustment and interruptions to the plan when people are involved.
Develop room for Displacement!
Minimize Multitasking, the performance of more than one task at the same time.
In the same what that it is important to not see everything equally. Doing several things at the same time does not make you more efficient!
Set expectations that do not require the members of your time, to divide their attention to any particular task at a time. “Multitasking just give people the change to screw up more than one thing at a time” ~ Steve Uzzell (motivational speaker)
Some studies have shown including it actually:
Slows your work down
Leads to stress
Saps 28% of the work day due to having to reorientation
Dr. Guy Winch has added;
It can lead to memory problems
And can harm relationships
