Opening Prayer
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father your servant is listening. Speak from your word that I might serve you better. Fill my mind and heart with your mercy and grace. Amen.
Psalm 16
Psalm 16
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Three Voices
Three Voices
David’s voice is clearly heard in this Psalm. A man running from King Saul’s deadly pursuit. Yet, David’s confidence is in God. The Lord helps David always stay a few steps ahead of the deranged king. David praises God for being his refuge and asks for God’s continued presence in his life.
David grew up surrounded by those who worshipped the rebel gods. Yet, David made a choice to follow only Yahweh, the Lord. Because he has put his lot in with God he knows his future is secure. God’s will for David’s life is sure. This doesn’t make his life easy. It doesn’t mean Saul will give up the chase today. But, David knows that God’s path leads to joy and he has confidence God will always be with him.
There is another voice in Psalm 16. It is the voice of the Messiah, our Savior. The promised one who would come from David’s kingly line to deliver us from the darkness of our enemies and al the evil forces. He also chose the cup of the father.
Matthew 26:39 (ESV)
My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.
Jesus followed a path of hardship, but with confidence in his Father’s hand.
He knew why he had come and that purpose was greater than any hardship he would endure. He spoke of the love of the Father for the Son, the love of God for the world, and the celebration of heaven for the lost being found. Jesus had joy as he carried out the work of redemption.
There is a third voice in this Psalm. It is the voice of you and me as we pray the same prayer. David’s prayer, Jesus prayer, is our prayer too. Not my will, not my path, but your will be done in my life.

Heavenly Father, I trust my life in your hands. Thank you for always being there for me. Lead me in the way of your son, Jesus. Help me to see and love the people around me like you do. Help me to focus on being a living testimony of your grace. Amen.
