Text: Revelation 1:10-18
Jesus introduction to the churches of Asia.
Isaiah 53:2 KJV 1900
For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, And as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; And when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
As Calvary
Isaiah 52:14 KJV 1900
As many were astonied at thee; His visage was so marred more than any man, And his form more than the sons of men:
But now he sounds a lot more like...
Psalm 45:2–3 KJV 1900
Thou art fairer than the children of men: Grace is poured into thy lips: Therefore God hath blessed thee for ever. Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, With thy glory and thy majesty.
Who he is...
he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2.1 (Ephesus)
the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive 2.8 (Smyrna)
he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; 2.12 (Pergamos)
the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; 2.18 (Thyatira)
he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; 3.1 (Sardis)
he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 3.7 (Philadelphia)
the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 3.14 (Laodicea)
The ascended, resurrected Jesus in his proper view is immense and blessed.
What he knows...
I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first
I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
In each situation we find a savior that is in tune with the thoughts actions and motivations of those that claimed his name.
We learned:
That Jesus is everything that the exultant, hurting, broken church needs.
The Shepherd knows his sheep
John 10:14 KJV 1900
I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
John 10:27 KJV 1900
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
There is no suprise to us that Jesus would know his Sheep. And that by his good grace he allows them to know him.
See when Jesus came and described himself he was allowing common unimportant men to know the God of heaven.
He is also allowing us to take comfort in the fact that God has missed nothing of who we are.
But these to things are not a surprise to us.
To know and be known is a common point of our relationship with God.
This know and known relationship acts the motivation to a God pleasing pure life.
Galatians 4:9 KJV 1900
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
This know and known relationship is the hallmark of the eternal life promised.
1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV 1900
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
Know God
Knowing God is a continual pursuit.
2 Peter 3:18 KJV 1900
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
Knowing God is the measure of whether or not we live.
John 17:3 KJV 1900
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Knowing God is a process of good and bad.
Philippians 3:10 KJV 1900
That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
It is the power and the suffering that brings a full understanding of who he is.
He knows you...
I Cor 8.3
2 Timothy 2:19 KJV 1900
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
The rock of my faith is that I know God knows and cares about me.
We see it in the threats to the church...
Nicolatians - The synagogue of Satan
These were those of a Pharisee thinking that made the believers turn back to keeping the law.
Problem: They separated God from his people by putting the law in between.
Jezebel - Worldliness in the church
She was one that said God is okay if you act like the world and do the things the world does.
Problem: She encouraged the worship of other gods instead of focus on God alone.
The grave threats to the church is anything that would come between you knowing him and him knowing you.
