Introduction
Juneteenth General Order No. 3 by General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas (proclaiming freedom to the slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865). Also known as Jubilee Day and Freedom Day.
But captivity—physical, emotional, and spiritual captivity is still an ever present human reality.
Estimates of 46 million people live in some form of slavery - This includes victims of forced labor, debt bondage, domestic servitude, human trafficking, child labor, forced marriage, and descent-based slavery.
Nearly 19 million Americans are addicted to drugs and alcohol. About 100,000 will die this year (with half being opioid deaths).
10 million Americans are addicted to gambling.
40 million Americans regularly visit porn sites online.
Over 400,000 victims of sexual assault every year.
About 400,000 children in foster care. Experience abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
72% of Americans feel financially stressed.
About 20 million Americans have had experienced a major episode of depression.
People are wrapped up in chains of despair, emotional pain, physical exhaustion, and spiritual imprisonment.
It there any hope?
Text
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.
17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Thesis/Transition
Point 1
The Devastating Imprisonment of Humankind
The Devastating Imprisonment of Humankind
Captivity, blindness, and oppression represent the social, physical, and spiritual/emotional problems that work to destroy God’s plan for humanity.
34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
8 “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
Point 2
The Rescue Mission of Jesus
The Rescue Mission of Jesus
The mission of Jesus is to proclaim liberty, heal the sick, and loosen the chains that bind people to hopelessness.
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
12 There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”
Point 3
The Empowered Purpose of the Church
The Empowered Purpose of the Church
The church’s mission is to proclaim the good news, pray for the sick, and untie those things the bind.
We are called to do what Jesus did!
12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.

3 Remember those in prison, as if you were there yourself. Remember also those being mistreated, as if you felt their pain in your own bodies.
