Introduction

The message of Revelation is revealing Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

On this Father's Day, God gives the message in the book of Revelation of things to avoid to inherit eternal life.

As we study the 20th chapter of the book of Revelation, we realize for the ungodly there is nowhere to run, and nowhere to hide.

Our Heavenly Father Wants his children to be with him for eternity.

As we begin our study today, we are reminded that the White Throne Judgment is for the ungodly, and they will be judged according to their works.

All will be there before the Judgment Seat!

I. All Will Be There

Revelation 20:13 NKJV

13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.

Everyone will stand before the judgment seat, even those from the bottom of the sea. No one will escape the judgment of God because he will raise them all from the dead.

He will even raise them from Hades, the temporary abode of the souls and spirits of the wicked. All will be judged as individuals according to their deeds.

The Bible teaches that man is destined to die once, and then he will face judgment. But believers and unbelievers will be raised separately and judged separately.

Believers will go before the judgment seat of Christ where their works will be judged. The purpose of this is not salvation, or we would not be raised at this time.

This is a judgment of works for the purpose of receiving rewards or crowns. Unbelievers will go before the Great White Throne where their works will be judged also.

The purpose of this is not salvation, but degrees of punishment. Two different Hebrew words have been translated “grave” in the Old Testament:

(1) Qeber, which means burying place, sepulcher, or pit, and (2) Sheol, which means underworld, subterranean world, world of the dead, or pit.

Because both these words mean “pit” about half the time Sheolis translated “grave” and about half the time it’s translated “hell.”

This confuses people, and some have mistakenly concluded that “hell” and the “grave” are the same thing.

However, a study of the texts in Hebrew reveals that people dug Qebers (graves), touched Qebers, buried people in Qebers, and put Qebers on the face of the earth.

But people never dug, touched, or buried anyone in a Sheol (hell). The texts also reveal that people don’t know anything in Qebers (graves),

but they are conscious in Sheol (hell, see Deuteronomy 18:11; 1 Samuel 28:11–15; Isaiah 14:9).

The point is, there is more than one kind of pit. Sheol means hell, not the grave.

So where do the wicked hang out after they die?

II. The Abode of Wicked People

Present (temporary) • Hell • Sheol • Hades

Future (permanent) • Lake of Fire • Valley of Hinnom • Gehenna

Note: The fallen angels will spend eternity in Tartaros (Greek)

Who else will spend eternity in the lake of fire?

III. Death and Hades Destroyed

Revelation 20:14 NKJV

14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

This will be the end of the first death—physical death. This is good news for believers but terrible news for unbelievers. They will want to die physically when they are raised from the dead, and cast into hell*,

but that will no longer be possible. They will have new bodies that cannot be destroyed in the Lake of Fire, so their suffering will be eternal.

This will also be the end of death. An intermediate abode for the lost will no longer be necessary. When the earth is destroyed people will be in one of two places: the heavenly city, or hell.

The Bible speaks of two kinds of life or two kinds of birth: (1) physical and (2) spiritual (born again).

Birth means “joined to.” In physical birth, you have a soul and spirit that’s joined to a body.

In spiritual birth, is where a soul and spirit are joined to God (called receiving Jesus, receiving the Holy Spirit, the new birth, etc).

The Bible also speaks of two kinds of death: (1) physical and (2) spiritual.

Death means “separated from.” In physical death, a soul and spirit are separated from a body.

In spiritual death, a soul and spirit are separated from God.

The second life is eternal life with God. And the second death is eternal separation from God by being cast into the Lake of Fire.

Don’t ask if a person ever ceases to exist. The answer is no! The question to ask is, where will that person spend eternity?

If they open the book of life

IV. Will Your Name Be There?

Revelation 20:15 NKJV

15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

When the sentence is rendered, one’s eternal destiny will not be determined by their deeds ...

but by what is written in the Book of Life. God will make a careful search of the heavenly list.

The names of those who did not accept Jesus before they died will have been blotted out of the Book of Life.

Their names will not be found, and they will join Satan, the Antichrist, and the False Prophet in the Lake of Fire forever.

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:13

13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Lord I believe that Jesus is the son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
