Tension in movies… scary scenes… Leave to get ice cream, hide your face,
Today's text - tension is starting to rise… anxiety is starting to build as Jesus begins the journey to Jerusalem
Never planned to be like Dad… because I often saw what he lacked… but as I got up and prepared to come to church today I realized how much of my life is like his

The Call:

Three would be disciples - who have common temptations…
things that are holding us back from being fully committed…
we might see ourselves.
God’s word is sometimes like Looking in a mirror… it allows us to see things that otherwise couldn’t see.
The Call: Love for Jesus before comfort and wealth (v57-58)
Luke 9:57–58 NIV
57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

The Call: Love for Jesus before comfort and wealth (v. 57-58)

He was a scribe… writing scripture over and over… God’s word impressed on his mind - but not his heart.
Done good things for God, but unable to do great things because he can’t step into unknown.
I can’t do this… I don’t have what it takes to sacrifice like that… but God says I have made the heavens I can put it in you. I can give you everything you need for the call I have on you… even the ability to sacrifice if you will follow me.
We know this, but the disciple who puts their love for comfort and wealth ahead of their love for Jesus
Because we are afraid of where Jesus will call us to go.
How do you choose
Seed that fell into the rocky ground
Believe the lie that stuff will satisfy.
The Call: Love for Jesus before vocation and plans(v59-60)
Luke 9:59–60 NIV
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

The Call: Love for Jesus before vocation and plans(v. 59-60)

Father probably not dead.
This was a typical response to an invitation.
Work is the source of identity for many.
But you let the dead bury their own dead, you go proclaim the KOG
Work is the means to getting what is most important…
For some their work is the way to get significance… purpose… influence… power
They don’t love their work, they love significance, purpose, influence, power
Work, success becomes our God. Who gave us our work?
We don’t make a living… we have been given a life… he’s our provider - not our employer.
But you let the dead bury their own dead, you go proclaim the KOG
The Call: Love for Jesus before family and relationships(v61-62)
Luke 9:61–62 NIV
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

The Call: Love for Jesus before family and relationships(v. 61-62)

Jesus was pro family… he didn’t hate wives and children. Single people weren’t seen as better than anyone else… But Jesus understood the pull of responsibility.
Jesus knew that if he went to family he wouldn’t come back… serve family… not a bad thing but it would make following Him impossible.
How different our faith is around friends and family.
Is there a way to follow Jesus and be invested in family? I think it’s a matter of getting your priorities straight. If Jesus comes first, you will love your family.
For this man, Jesus knew that he couldn’t follow … be about the work that was to be done… and be looking back.
IF he lived looking back, he would be unable to ever lead people into the KOG…
because direction matters. Direction of your life matters as much as intention.
All three of these would be disciples, expressed love for Jesus… was it real? Were they followers? I’d say probably not.
There intention was in the right place… They understood enough to know what they ought to do but the direction of their life led them toward things other than serving him.

Direction, not intention, determines destination.

We’ve probably all hear the saying… The road to hell is paved with good intentions
if you know which things in your life are negotiable and which are absolutely essential, you have a great advantage.
All decisions are simplified once you know what is important to you.
It seems to me that clarifying our values would help all of us in the watersheds of life.
WE see next in our text a group of people who have clarified what is most important to them.
Jesus sends out his advance team… preparing the way. Telling the people what’s to come.

The marks of the mission

In their going and coming Scripture reveals some powerful marks of living on mission.
How our lives may be marked when we live on mission
Obedience: (v. 1-2)
Luke 10:1–2 NIV
1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

Obedience: I do what he tells me to do (v. 1-2)

2x2… not a solo sport… relationships… power when 2 or more are gathered… synergy…
Go and pray… pray for God to send out more workers… those who would come after… for us… the harvest isn’t done… we can be praying…
Obedience.... these aren’t just good ideas… clean your room - studied it - write a book - translate it - made copies - taught others what it means
Obedience means I do what he tells me to do.
Endurance: (v. 3-9)
Luke 10:3–9 NIV
3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. 5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. 8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’

Endurance: I focus on sharing the message of the gospel (v. 3-9)

Not the culture war.
Maybe church isn’t growing because God is waiting for us to love.
A dark world needs a light, not just a reminder of the darkness.
Trust: (v. 10-16)
Luke 10:10–16 NIV
10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. 13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. 16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

Trust: I leave outcomes to him (v. 10-16)

He sends people to folks who wouldn’t respond.
Rejection isn’t about you.
Gratitude: (v. 17-24)
Luke 10:17–24 NIV
17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” 18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” 23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

Gratitude: I’m thankful for what he’s done for me (v. 17-24)

Direction, not intention, determines destination.
