Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
It is an interesting thing that we see here in the Beatitudes. You see in the 10 commandments we a list of 10 things we should not do. Here we see 8 things we should do. 8 things that if we do them will bring rewards and blessings.
We are going to take a few weeks to talk about the Beatitudes. Today I want to look at the 1st beatitude and not only see what Christ is says
Lets begin with the 1st one
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Now this beatitude is using terms Israels would have known. God’s people have often been referred to as poor, as in need, as afflicted. as destitute.
But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay.
So Jesus here is turning this on its head. You have heard that Gods people are often needy and afflicted and while that may be true. It is the needy and the afflicted that will typically inherit Gods kingdom.
When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them.
Meaning Not Poor Economically, but rather poor in Spirit. Poor in Pride. Poor in self sufficiency. An Understanding that it is Christ they must rely on. Their own ingenuity isn’t enough. Therefore we are not talking finances but rather about humility. The humble shall inherit the earth.
God I need you. God i thirst for You! God I hunger for You!
It is this understanding that before God we are nothing. He supplies us with everything.
So what can we learn from this? That it is the humble that will inherit Gods kingdom. The proud, the self sufficient will not.
There are 3 quick takeaways I want to bring to us Men this morning that I believe will help us grow near to God, lead in our families, lead at work.
Walk in humility.
If we went to walk in the Kingdom we must be people marked by humility. We may know it all, but shouldn’t flaunt it. If God gifts you with unique gifts you shouldn’t advertise it it, but as people praise you. Praise Jesus.
You see here though, if we are to be successful husbands and Fathers we must also be marked by humility. If there is one thing Ib have learned since having children it is that I know less than I thought I did.
Repent quickly
If we are to walk in the Kingdom we must be people that repent quickly. You see people who are poor in Spirit, understand their need for the Cross. They understand that if it wasn’t for Jesus they would have no hope. So when you Sin, Repent quickly my friends.
In your families as well, when you make a mistake. admit it. your family knows you aren’t perfect. Acting like it only proves that fact more! Now I’m not saying every detail needs to be explained to your children, but if you treat them wrongly, get down and tell them you are sorry. This will teach them the power of Forgiveness and repentance.
Serve like Jesus
Jesus demonstrated to us when He washed the disciples feet the power of servant leadership. You and I need to be a people marked by our willingness to serve those around us.
We can demonstrate the same humility and love by serving our families, especially when it hurts us.
