Characteristics of kingdom of God

Synopsis

Those who have entered the kingdom must live according to its values, anticipating the reign of peace which will come when Jesus Christ returns.

The kingdom of God does not conform to the standards of this world

Jn 18:36; Ro 14:17

John 18:36 (NKJV) — 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”

Romans 14:17 (NKJV) — 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Those who inherit the kingdom of God are to bear its fruit

1 Th 2:12

1 Thessalonians 2:12 (NKJV) — 12 that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

Matthew 25:34–36 (NKJV) — 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

2 Peter 1:10–11 (NKJV) — 10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The kingdom of God is and will be a kingdom of peace

Isaiah 2:2–4 (NKJV) — 2 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the Lord’s house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. 3 Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.

James 3:18 (NKJV) — 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

The kingdom of God is a kingdom of forgiveness

Matthew 18:21–35 (NKJV) — 21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Status in the kingdom of God

Matthew 18:1–5 (NKJV) — 1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, 3 and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.

Matthew 20:25–28 (NKJV) — 25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. 27 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave—28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
