The Beat Up, Roundup, and Get Up.
Acts 14:1-7, 19-20
THE BEAT UP
Brody Ridder is 12-year-old student at the Academy of Charter Schools in Westminster, Colo.
Hehas been repeatedly bullied. “There are kids that have pushed him and called him names.” When Brody asked his classmates to sign his yearbook on May 24, “they told him no, which made him very sad.”
Paul was beaten up.
Acts 14:2 tells us,
Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.
What does it mean to poison the minds of people against someone?
Has that ever happened to you?
What was that like?
Listen, it happened to Jesus…
Paul was talked about, lied on, misrepresented, stoned, dragged out of the city, and left for dead.
They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead.
THE ROUNDUP
But after the disciples had gathered around him,
he got up and went back into the city.
Acts 14:20
According to the definition found in the Cambridge Dictionary, a Roundup is
· The act of Gathering together people
On May 24, Momma Ridder reached her breaking point. That evening, she posted on the school’s Facebook page for parents. “My poor son. Doesn’t seem like things are getting any better. 2 teachers and a total of 2 students wrote in his yearbook. Despite Brody asking all kinds of kids to sign it,” Ridder wrote. Teach your kids kindness.”
The next day, Brody experienced a Roundup.
“He had messages from eighth-graders and even 11th graders,” Ridder said. “Brody's exact words to me were, ‘This is the best day ever.’ Some kids even put their phone numbers for Brody to contact them."
What do boxers corners do?
The fighter's corner is a one-minute sanctuary between the physical battles of each round.
There are three cornermen - Head Cornerman (whose usually also the Trainer), the 2nd Cornerman (or called the Assistant Cornerman) and the Cut-Man
The Head Cornerman gives instructions or adjusts the fighter’s game-plan between rounds. Angelo Dundee was the boxing trainer and cornerman, for Muhammad Ali.
He also worked with 15 other world boxing champions including Sugar Ray Leonard and George Foreman.
The 2nd Cornerman gives the fighter water, washes off the mouthguard and wipes sweat off the fighter between rounds
The Cut-Man stops facial bleeding or swelling and applies petroleum jelly to any abrasions between rounds, and other duties such as applying ice or adrenaline to reduce swelling and stop bleeding.
Then there are additional Corner-members on the ground who are usually charged with getting supplies up to the official seconds.
Two are better than one...
If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
People without Cornermen become easy prey
People without Cornermen become discouraged, dismayed, disillusioned, and depressed.
Listen Jesus had cornermen—Peter, James, and John.
Jesus sent His disciples out two by two and He Himself promised to be with us always, in the presence of His Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is the One who comes alongside us as our Counselor, Comforter, Teacher, and Helper.
Paul had Barnabas, Silas, John Mark, Luke, and Timothy.
