Remember this quote we also looked at last week
SLIDE 7
Unbelief asks, “How can this be?” / Faith asks, “How shall this be?”
SLIDE 8
We have to admire the faith of the patriarchs. They did not have a complete Bible, and yet their faith was strong. They handed God’s promises down from one generation to another.
Okay let’s roll on to our next hero of faith in Chapter 11
SLIDE 9
Hebrews 11:23 (NASB95)
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.
Keep in mind or your heart how we will describe these next stands by faith through verse 29
Why do you think the author of Hebrews included Moses’ parents
Let’s take a little deeper look into their faith
SLIDE 10
Exodus 6:20 (NASB95)
20 Amram married his father’s sister Jochebed, and she bore him Aaron and Moses; and the length of Amram’s life was one hundred and thirty-seven years.
SLIDE 11
Exodus 2:1–2 (NASB95)
1 Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi.
2 The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months.
SLIDE 12
Exodus 2:3 (NASB95)
3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.
Why did have to hide Moses?
I love their creativity in faith .......they basically put him in the Nile like Pharoah said
DISCUSSION
Though godly parents cannot pass on their faith as they do family traits, they can certainly create an atmosphere of faith at home and be examples to their children.
Can our kids learn faith at home? or should they be
SLIDE 13
A home should be the first school of faith for a child
DISCUSSION
Okay let’s take a look at Moses faith
SLIDE 14
Hebrews 11:24–25 (NASB95)
24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
25 choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,
As the adopted son of the Egyptian princess, Moses could have led an easy life in the palace.
But his faith moved him to refuse that kind of life. He chose to identify with God’s suffering people.
SLIDE 15
Hebrews 11:26 (NASB95)
26 considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward.
Faith always lines up with Godly values
SLIDE 16
True faith causes a believer to hold the right values and make the right decisions.
That phrase describes a way of life that we today would call “successful”—position, prestige, power, wealth, and freedom from problems. Not much to do with Godly faith
Did Moses ever go back to the Egyptian lifestyle?
A example story - The mayor of a large American city moved into a dangerous and decayed housing project to demonstrate the problems and needs of the minorities. But she also kept her fashionable apartment and eventually moved out of the slum.
There is more into Moses’ faith, let’s take a look
SLIDE 17
Hebrews 11:27 (NASB95)
27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen.
What here helped Moses, battle fear of Pharoah and stand on faith?
SLIDE 18
Hebrews 11:28 (NASB95)
28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that he who destroyed the firstborn would not touch them.
Let’s take a look how this act of faith a little closer, see if we can grab some nuggets here
SLIDE 19
Exodus 11:1 (NASB95)
1 Now the Lord said to Moses, “One more plague I will bring on Pharaoh and on Egypt; after that he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, he will surely drive you out from here completely.
SLIDE 20
Exodus 11:2 (NASB95)
2 “Speak now in the hearing of the people that each man ask from his neighbor and each woman from her neighbor for articles of silver and articles of gold.”
There has been many plagues on Egypt......Pharoah never would let God’s people go did he? Did Moses give up as God did each plague?
BTW what was the reason Moses told Pharoah they wanted to go out in the wilderness for?
God told Moses after this plague that Pharoah will let him go, no only that but drive them out!
Look at that passage Ex 11:2 again....What does he tell Moses to do? It’s faith when God tells us something and we stand on it not really telling others. But God says, “speak in the hearing of the people” ..... Many other things also
Man all the firstborn would die after midnight that night.
I love what God also tells Moses in these two verses shortly after telling him the other.
SLIDE 21
Exodus 11:6–7 (NASB95)
6 ‘Moreover, there shall be a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been before and such as shall never be again.
7 ‘But against any of the sons of Israel a dog will not even bark, whether against man or beast, that you may understand how the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.’
Is that not amazing and how it happened to every detail.... and add speak all this in the hearing of the people. How many people do you think?
Vance Havner said this
SLIDE 22
“Moses chose the imperishable, saw the invisible, and did the impossible.”
Okay let’s wrap this up on this last verse for the night
SLIDE 23
Hebrews 11:29 (NASB95)
29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as though they were passing through dry land; and the Egyptians, when they attempted it, were drowned.
So a lot of stuff happened in these faith examples with Moses parents, Moses with Pharoah in many events here. There was a lot of struggle here against who?
So what could we call this faith? Moses - faith warring
SLIDE 24 “HALL OF FAITH” image slide
Now Hebrews 30 will pick up with Jericho....no stories from the wilderness journey. Why did the author of Hebrews not have a “faith wandering” story here? This will get us all to examine ourselves!
There is no mention of Israel’s failure and 40 years of wasted time. Why?.... because that was an experience of unbelief, not faith. Nowhere in Hebrews 11 will we find a record of any failure because of unbelief.
