Luke 24:49English Standard Version
Luke 24:49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Acts 1:4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
Acts 1:5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
What happened when they received the Holy Spirit?
Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
Acts 2:3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 10:44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.
Acts 10:45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.
Acts 10:46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,
Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
They were promised power when they received the Holy Spirit but when they received the Holy Spirit they spoke in tongues, therefore speaking in tongues = power.
How does speaking in tongues produce power?
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressedthem: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.
Acts 26:25 But Paul said, “I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speakingtrue and rational words.
· ἀποφθέγγομαι (apophthengomai), vb. prophesy; speak; utter; speak one’s opinion. Heb. equiv. fr. LXX: נבע (1), קסם (1).[1]
Four Ways in Which the Holy Spirit Gives Us Power:
1. Confirmation
a. I know Jesus is alive.
i. Acts 2:33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
b. I know I am filled with the Holy Spirit.
i. Acts 10:44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.
ii. Acts 10:45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.
iii. Acts 10:46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,
2. Communication
a. 1 Corinthians 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
b. Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
c. Romans 8:27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
d. Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
3. Edification
a. 1 Corinthians 14:4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
b. Jude 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
4. Sanctification
a. James 3:8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
b. The Holy Spirit does not cause us to lose control, He helps us get control.
i. Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
ii. Galatians 5:23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
c. 1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
d. 1 Corinthians 6:20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Romans 10:9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Luke 12:11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say,
Luke 12:12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
1 Corinthians 12:3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
