The Church today is a church that has been weakened by a lack of biblical truth. Not a lack of Bibles but a lack of interest in the bible. Years of having the bible taught for a few minutes on a Sunday morning have created a church that is not just biblically illiterate but spiritually weak. No longer is it the norm for fathers to gather their family each morning for the reading of the bible and then encourage each member of the family to end their day with a personal time of Bible reading and prayer. No longer is it the norm for many believers to carry a bible to church and then to underline key verses and to make notes in the margin so that they can hide God’s word in their heart.. We have become a generation of believers who are like the person who goes to the store but once there , forgets what they were to buy.
We are like the parent who tells their child that they never have to study or do their homework and then is surprised when their child has failing grades. The Bible constantly reminds the believer that God’s word is to be eaten daily like food, cherished carefully like treasure.
Perhaps the greatest danger of a bibleless faith is that many believers, even pastors in churches such as Bethel Church, Elevation Church and Hillsong Church, do not have a biblical view of God. And a God who is not the God of the Bible is not the true God. And wrong belief will always lead to wrong behavior, wrong worship , and even wrong emotions. True belief leads to hope, joy, and peace.
In the Bible we see the One God who eternally exists fully in three distinct persons. The one God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father is perfectly God, the Son is perfectly God, the Spirit who makes us holy is perfectly God. But the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, the Spirit is not Father. They are three distinct persons, complete and equal and in perfect communion with each other. And they are not just complete, they are completely satisfied, lacking nothing within their perfect relationship.
No wonder Paul would say that the mystery of godliness
16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
Why is belief in the triune person of God, which is clearly taught in the Bible but must be accepted by faith so important?
Because the greatness of the person of God makes possible the greatness of the power of God in your life.
And here’s the point this morning: Unless you truly lean into the greatness and awesomeness of the God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit you will never truly believe that God is omnipotent - all powerful, omniscient - all knowing, and omnipresent - able to present everywhere. And this will affect your faith, your worship, and your ability to experience love, you, peace and hope.
The true God, and only the true God who is able to be everywhere is able to be with you and to go with you as you go through the trials, upheavals and changes of life.
(1) The true God’s promise to you
24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
1 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
16 Make your face shine on your servant; save me in your steadfast love!
(2) The true God’s presence with you
The omniscience of God - when we step into the unknown, remember that God is the known, and He always knows the unknown. What is uncertain from our perspective is certain in the mind of God.
We might already know that God is everywhere but we often forget that everywhere is “with you.”
Whenever God’s people move into the unknown, the unfamiliar, and the uncertain, God’s word reminds them of his certain presence.
6 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
The Book of Deuteronomy - from the Lord through Moses to the people as they prepare to enter the promised land, as they prepare for the unknown, as Joshua prepares to lead the people into the new land.
8 It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.
The people of Israel - God says I will be with you
Joshua - I will be with you
Do not be afraid, do be dismayed
Solomon
20 Then David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.
Even the Son of king David needed to hear that God would not leave him or forsake him.
5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
The Lord speaks to Moses the leader of Israel, Moses speaks to Joshua, the commander of Israel, David speaks to the Solomon, the future king of Israel, and now the preacher of Hebrews speaks to the persecuted believers in the house churches of Rome and reminds the of the Lord’s promise: I will not leave you or forsake you.
And now the Lord Jesus says to the disciples:
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
And now King David, the writer of Psalm 139 says to you, whether you live in San Jose, or Lathrup or Canada or anywhere in the world - the Lord who is all knowing, all powerful, and all present is with you
1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. 7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.
The Father who reigns in heaven the Son who who is the risen savior, the Spirit who indwells and empowers every true believer reminds us over and over in scripture:
I will never leave you or forsake you. I am with you always.
