Chapter 1 Paul places the whole world under God’s judgement. Chapter 2 He is going after the religious person, the moral person, legalistic person, the self righteous person, the Jew.
Romans 2:1 ESV
1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.
This man is self righteous who does not commit outward sins mentioned in chapter one. He looks down his nose at others who do. He is just as guilty. This man may not sin as outwardly as those in chapter one but are guilty of inward sins of the thoughts and heart.
He thinks he will get to heaven because he has done so many good deeds and refrained from evil deeds.
There is a belief in Judaism that if my good deeds outweigh my bad deeds I will be ok.
So if one treats 5 people really good and murder 4 that they will end up on the right side of the scales of Justice.
Or if they are caught speeding and they tell the police officer that most of the time they don’t speed that will excuse them from a ticket.
Or the guy that was faithful to his wife 99% of the time but cheated just once. Is that ok?
Why do we think God will judge this way? We end up judging ourselves good but the problem is that I’m not the judge. God will be judging me.
The person who would say yeah those evil people of the world should be judged. Paul says hold on now and let me address you. You think your off the hook. You do the same things they do only you do it secretly, inwardly, privetly.
This passage isn’t saying you shouldn’t judge. It’s analyzing those who are making judgments.
There are right and wrong ways to judge.
Wrong way would be to do it arrogantly, or blind to our own issues ( that would be the plank in the eye ),
We have to make moral judgments. We have to make clear judgements on what God says is right and wrong.
What if someone came to me and said they were abusing their kids and asked me what should they do. Wouldn’t it be wrong of me to say well who I’m I to judge what your doing is right or wrong?
John 7:24 ESV
24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
Isaiah 5:20 ESV
20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
We need to call evil evil and good good.
Proverbs 17:15 ESV
15 He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the Lord.
According to this verse if I or as a church affirm a sinful lifestyle it’s an abomination to the Lord.
What Paul is saying when you judge the rightness and wrongness of other peoples behaviour according to the what God says, you show that you know we all have a moral standard that we will all be judged by including myself that we will give an account to.
Proving that you are guilty and you know it. Universal guilt.
God is the righteous judge and it will be according to truth. Not how feel.
