The Mentor
We have been bought with a price. The precious blood of Jesus who gave His life on Calvary to set us free from the bondage of sin.
Having spent much time in the Slave market of sin we bring with us much baggage into this new life. we bring with us all the baggage of the negative influences growing up, from friends, family, educational systems, TV, Radio, internet, to include our addictions and suffering metal and physical etc.
When we were saved, we were not only spared eternal damnation, but we were adopted into God’s family and made co rulers as the bride of Christ.
But if we are to rule with Him, we must ourselves learn the ways of royalty, the royal protocol. We must learn to walk the path of righteousness, to carry ourselves in such a way as to bring glory to our Father.
To do so, we have given as a mentor, God’s very own spirit that will guide us to the objective and who is the power of the life that we are to live as Royal family of God.
The very spirit that came upon the Lord at His baptism after coming out of the water is the spirit that we receive at our spiritual baptism.
The title of this Message is The Mentor
Hymn: Leaning on the everlasting Arms
Opening Prayer
The Subject of the Holy Spirit may not be a popular one and apparently not taught in too many churches as validated by the complete absence of it in any dialogue among Christians.
Maybe and probably, it is because, we live in a postmodern world. As postmoderns we tend to stray away from the supernatural, that which science or human reason cannot validate. Churches are trying to get the postmoderns to come to church, not to demonstrate that they are stuck in the past with an ancient old book called the bible and silly talk of spirits.
The second reason may be what the charismatic movement has done with the spirit in making a mockery out of the church, with their uncontrolled body movements, tongues, and incoherent outbursts, minus any substance of God’s word which makes the church look like a circus side show act. As such, churches of any given denomination do not want to even bring up the subject of the Holy Spirit in fear that they will be stuck with that stigma.
A church that is centered on the teaching of God’s word is not afforded the luxury of skipping over passages that deal with the Holy Spirit, therefore we will seek to honor God, praying for the illumination afforded to us by the Holy Spirit in regard to the subject about the Holy Spirit.
So let us start with a warning.
What if all of our lives are impacted and influenced by spirits in the unseen realm. What if there are no independent thinkers or agents and the reality is that our lives are greatly influenced by spirits agencies. And if our thoughts, motives, and actions are indeed influenced much by this unseen realm, what might each of us be influenced by if indeed we ignore the very spirit that was given to us at our new birth; that is the Holy Spirit?
In Paul’s letter to the Churches, we have been studying on the subject of Christian Conduct. In this passage there are three positive imperatives and there are three negatives.
The Positives are
1. Rejoice
2. Pray
3. Thanksgiving
The Negatives of which we will begin today
1. Stop quenching the Spirit
2. Stop despising Prophetic utterances
3. Abstain from every form of evil
Our subject today and for the next several sessions is on the Holy Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NASB95) — 19 Do not quench the Spirit.
(το πνευμα μη σβεννυτε [to pneuma mē sbennute]). Μη []
The first Question that should come to mind this morning is who or what is the Holy Spirit?
πνεῦμα [pneuma /pnyoo·mah/] [1] Breath wind life, spiritual life.
Among other spirits including the human spirit the Spirit of God is Holy, that is set apart from all other spirits for He is the spirit of God possessing all the qualities of the divine eternal being.
There are separate theological studies and doctrines for each member of the Trinity.
1. The study of God is Theology
2. The study of Christ is Christology
3. The study of the Spirit is Pneumatology
Within every believer there lies a source of power that guarantees eternal life, empowers the Christian to live the Christian life, to mold and shape the Christian into conformity with Christ.
This power is the holy Spirit
First what the Holy Spirit is NOT.
The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force.
The Holy Spirit is a person, The same as God the Father and The Lord Jesus Christ who is a person.
The Holy spirit as He is presented in Scripture is God in Essence, one with the trinity. He is eternal and bears all the attributes that make up God’s divine character.
To deny the existence of the Holy Spirit is to deny the key tenant of the Christian faith which is the Doctrine of the trinity.
To deny and ignore the Holy Spirit leaves one impotent to live the Christian life and speaks blasphemy and unbelief against His holy name.
As a Person, The Holy Spirit holds all the attributes of personage.
1. Intellect
the Holy Spirit is omniscient He has complete knowledge of all things, past, present and future and He knows all the possibilities. The Holy Spirit learns nothing new, for His knowledge is perfect and complete. He knows us better than we know ourselves.
Who better to receive personal training from than one who is From God and who possesses all wisdom?
Ephesians 1:17 (NASB95) — 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.
He is that same spirit that resides with the Messiah
Isaiah 11:2 (NASB95) — 2 The Spirit of the Lordwill rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 2:10–16
2. Determination of Choice
One in Essence, but makes independent choices apart from the Godhead, as the Father makes independent choices as well as the son being one in essence and free to make independent choices.
1 Corinthians 12:11 (NASB95) — 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
3. Sensibility
A person responds and react. God can respond with pleasure.
Genesis 8:21 (NASB95) — 21 The Lord smelled the soothing aroma;
Matthew 3:17 (NASB95) — “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
Hebrews 11:6 (NASB95) — 6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
When The Midwives in the Exodus refused to put the baby boys to death, fearing the Lord, God responded by rewarding the Puah and Shiphrah.
God can be grieved as noted in Genesis 6.
Genesis 6:6 (NASB95) — 6 The Lordwas sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
In Ephesians 4:30 we are told to stop bringing grief to the holy Spirit.
As a person, the Holy Spirit is sent from the Father (John 14:26) and sent from the Son (John 15:26). That is a person that is being sent by another person.
How is it that God can be grieved or brought to anger we can debate whether God has such emotions or not, but the fact is, when I consider that I have personal God, I desire not to bring Him grief, but I want to be pleasing to God in heaven as my life itself becomes a living sacrifice that is a soothing aroma to the Lord.
IN this regard it is impossible to please God without faith and without the Holy Spirit who teaches and mentors I have no faith.
The same pleasure and grief that can be lifted up to the Father and the Son is also regarded by the Holy Spirit.
It is no small deal that every born-again believer possesses the indwelling ministry of God the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:9 (NASB95) — 9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
1 Corinthians 6:19 (NASB95) — 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
1 Corinthians 3:16 (NASB95) — 16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
There three Categories of the human race.
There are the Jews. God’s elected people of the physical seed of Abraham who are the recipients of the inheritance of promises of God to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. These are the Jews. Who are in the world today and still are God’s people with a future as unto the Lord.
There are the Go im. The Gentiles.
In the Jewish mind there are only two categories of people in this world. The Jews, and everybody else.
With the giving of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost a new category emerges which is the church.
It was day 50 after the resurrection of Christ that the Church age began when the believer received upon him and herself the great gift second only to our so great salvation the gift of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:1–4 (NASB95) — 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
It was on that day that a new spiritual race had been brought into existence. Not to take the place of the Jew but becomes its own category of believers according to God’s plan for the ages.
Galatians 3:26–29 (NASB95) — 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.
Whereas the Jews are the physical seed of Abraham
Genesis 12:3 IN you all families of the earth would be blessed
Those in Christ are Abraham’s spiritual seed.
John 3:6 (NASB95) — 6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
The Racial Jews were circumcised in the flesh it is the Abraham’s spiritual seed that are circumcised in the heart.
Romans 2:29 (NASB95) — 29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.
The Church age is distinct from all the other ages. Throughout the Tanakh the filling of the Holy spirit came upon only a few for special purposes or revelation. The filling was in most part temporal and was taken away.
but in the Church age there is the permanent gift of the Holy spirit who is our teacher and our mentor forever.
The best of us and the worst of us have within the soul the indwelling ministry of God the Holy Spirit that can quenched and grieved, but not lost.
This is what Paul says to the very carnal Corinthians
1 Corinthians 6:19 (NASB95) — 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
The coming of the Holy Spirit was the fulfillment of the promise of the Lord.
John 14:26 (NASB95) — 26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
John 14:16–18 (NASB95) — 16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
John 16:7–8 (NASB95) — 7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
Luke 24:49 (NASB95) — 49 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
It is the bride that will come as a coheir to the Last Adam who will rule during in the Millennial reign of Christ.
As royal family of God we need training, and it is the holy Spirit that is task as the king makers.
Closing hymn: Deep Deep Love of Jesus
Closing prayer.
