Meek is Not Weak

Matthew 5:5

“Blessed” means more than “happy.” Some translate it as “happy,” but it really means “having everything you need supplied.” Having everything you need spiritually: that is blessed. And if there’s one thing that this world would not say is blessed, it is meekness because we think of meekness as weakness. But the Jesus says, “Blessed are the meek: for they [and they alone] shall inherit the earth.”

I. Meekness:

a. Meekness is not weakness. And if you ever think otherwise, try being meek for a few days. You’ll find out that meekness is not weakness. Jesus said in Matthew11:29, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart.” We can look at the life of Christ and see that He was anything but week.

b. Meekness means “yielded” and, “strength under control” like a powerful ox that yields to the yoke. It has been “meeked.” It has been broken. Now it yields to the master. It is strength under control. That’s what meekness is. It is a compliant spirit. The meek are the greatest promoters of the Gospel. The person who is meek is not sensitive about themselves. They are not always watching themselves and looking out for their own interests, and what other people say.

II. Getting Meek:

a. FIRST, you’ve got to submit to God (Matthew 11:28–30). If you would be meek, there’s a decision that you have to make. Jesus will not force Himself upon you. God will not force you to take this yoke. You’re going to have to intentionally take the yoke of Jesus Christ. You must take it! “Take my yoke upon you.”

b. SECOND, You must be responsive to His Word (James 1:21) You must be submissive to God and respond to His Word! “Receive” means “to welcome with all humility.” If you’ll receive the Lord Jesus Christ and receive the Word of God with meekness, the engrafted Word that is able to save your soul, you’ll learn that through the Word of God, God will take the reins.

c. THIRD: You must be filled with the Spirit of God (Galatians 5:22-23). It is a fruit of the Spirit. You don’t produce that fruit; you bear that fruit. He produces that fruit in you. You walk in the Spirit. There will be that meekness in your heart and in your life. You’re more like Christ! “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”

III. The Reward for Meekness:

a. This speaks of the present and the future, (1 Corinthians 3:21–23; 2 Corinthians 6:10). If you don’t have blessedness, you can’t enjoy it, because blessedness does not come in things. But, if you have blessedness, you have everything! What can the devil do to a person like this, “all things are your’s”—“as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.”

b. But not only in this world; also, in the world to come. There’s coming a time when the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdoms of our Lord and His Christ. (Isaiah 11:6; Revelation 11:15; Revelation 20:6) The saints will rule and reign with Jesus Christ. He didn’t make this for the devil, but for His people. “Blessed are the meek: for they [and they alone] shall inherit the earth.”
