37 On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.
38 The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.”
39 He said this about the Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Illustration: Ask for two volunteers to play the living water game. Have 10 cups (five for each participant) filled with water. The contestants will be asked to sip each of cups of water to figure out which cup contains the living water(life water). The first contestant to figure it out wins a prize.
This week we are going to be talking a lot about living water.
In john 7 Jesus made an important announcement . Whats an announcement?
He said those who believe in me will have a stream of living water flowing from deep within them.
What do you all think he meant by this statement?
Do you think he meant we’d be a people that would have to walk around in wet clothes all the time because water would just come out of us? That’d be kind of weird wouldn’t it.
So what did he mean?
Well were in a beautiful place to that shows us in a very real way what he meant by living water.
I want you this week to look around. Everywhere you look you can see the effects of water on nature. We see flowers and trees, insects and animals. All which require water.
So when Jesus said all those that believe in him would have deep springs or streams of water flowing out of them.
Do you think he meant that everyplace a Christian is he could have an effect on the world around them. You see water is necessary for life isn't it.
If you would picture with me a dessert. It’s hot dry and dusty. The sun is beating down on your neck. When you get to this dessert, you notice that there are people trying to live and farm there. You notice that their gardens are wilted and dying. The people are skin and bones and their lips are cracked from the heat.
What if you had been given the power to change all of that? What is you could walk into that dessert place and everywhere you walked water would begin seeping up from the ground, and then plants began to thrive again. The people could drink all the cool water they could swallow. Instead of dusty, dying earth this water in you transformed the dessert into a paradise.
How many of you would think that was awesome? How many of you would travel all over the world transforming desserts into a place teaming with life? Wouldn't that be awesome. Wouldn’t that be like the coolest mission ever?
Yet in a very real way this is what Jesus says about you. He is the living water in you. Everywhere we go we have the possibility of sharing life in a world that is living in death and destruction.
Its the life of the Jesus through the gospel message. However, in order for you to be able to give life you must first have it yourself.
This is why Jesus said, Whoever believes in me with have streams of water.
