Jesus example for personal evangelism (so far)

Evangelize- to preach the Christian gospel. Jesus sets a great example and gives us some tools for personal evangelism.
Jesus see’s opportunity
Have everyone open bibles to Jn4, I will read vv.7-9 then go from there.
Jn4:7-9 “7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)”
Jesus opened a conversation (4:7)
Have social contact, look for opportunities
Be ready to talk, receive others not like you
Jesus found common interest (4:7)
With Jesus it was about water, with old men it is about weather, or old women about old men, at least that is what I heard.
Don’t rush to the spiritual, develop the relations with someone. Jesus oftentimes saw a physical need, met that first.
Jesus is asked questions (4:9)
Jesus actions sparks interest and question
Remember Jesus, Rabbi speaking to woman; speaking to Samaritan woman, speaking to immoral woman
A reminder that may our words and our actions spark interest not division.
Some things for us today before we get to our passage:
In personal evangelism arouse spiritual interest by our example
How can we arose spiritual interest?
In personal evangelism show kindness and compassion to everyone, including the wicked, or those who think, believe differently than we do.
In personal evangelism be willing to put aside any/all racial, social, personal prejudices
In personal evangelism may we remember the words of Peter as we do the words of Jesus
1 Peter 3:15 NASB95
15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
(Insert parallel with Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman PowerPoint here)
Jesus used a similar evangelism style with each, but made it very personal to the person. For it has been said “There are certain truths which a man cannot accept; he must discover them for himself.”
(Transition) In other words we can lead a horse to water but we cannot make him drink. And it is the same with the living water we are going to be discussing today.
So, here is where we are going:
The text and gleaning from it. (Jn4:10-15)
Jesus sparks interest (Jn4:10-12)
Jesus is willing to give living water (jn4:10-12)
Jesus describes effects of living water (Jn4:13-15)

Gleaning from our text

In part two of our story we continue to look at the text with a focus on personal evangelism as exampled by Jesus. So, let’s glean together from this evenings passage.
John 4:10–11 NASB95
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?
John 4:12–13 NASB95
12 “You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;
John 4:14–15 NASB95
14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.”
Who is the giver of the gift (v.10)?
God is the giver
What is the given gift (v.10)?
Living Water, the Word, Jesus
What observation did the woman make (v.11)?
That he had nothing to draw physical water with, and, where do YOU get this living water?
What conclusion, assumption does she make (v.12)?
You are not greater than Jacob are you?
Jesus makes two bold statements, promises in (vv.13-14), what are they?
One who drinks of this will thirst
One who drinks of the gift will never thirst
What is the response from the woman (v.15)?
I think now maybe should key in on the Living Water, meaning, scripture uses and what did Jesus mean by it regarding personal evangelism for just a few quick minutes
In the culture’s mindset Living water was running water, not stagnant water
In the Jewish spiritual mindset it also meant soul thirsting, quenching water from God.
(Insert Living Water PowerPoint here)
(other scriptures used, referenced: Isa12:3; Ps42:1; Isa55:1; Jer2:13)
I think I should give a couple of these scriptures just due to the rich text
Isaiah 55:1 NASB95
1 “Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk Without money and without cost.
and we need to remember, Israel had problems with it, may we not have the same problems
Jeremiah 2:13 NASB95
13 “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water.
According to (Jer2:13) what had the people done?
Here is a bonus scripture for you not on your outline.
Jeremiah 17:13 NASB95
13 O Lord, the hope of Israel, All who forsake You will be put to shame. Those who turn away on earth will be written down, Because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the Lord.
(Transition) now lets move on to our points regarding personal evangelism and Jesus example.

Jesus sparks an interest

Remember when it comes to personal evangelism we need to spark an interest.
John 4:10–11 HCSB
10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would ask Him, and He would give you living water.” 11 “Sir,” said the woman, “You don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do You get this ‘living water’?
John 4:12 HCSB
12 You aren’t greater than our father Jacob, are You? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.”
Do you remember what the common interest was (v.9)?
Jesus words sparked interest and she ended up with a question (v.12) are You greater than Jacob?

Jesus willing to give living water

A gift is just that, a gift, you don’t earn it, but you have to receive it. God gave the gift and the woman and us today have to be willing to receive the gift to enjoy the benefits, the blessings of the gift.
(Below not on the screen)
John 4:10–12 NRSV
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?”
The gift of God brought about questions, more of a statement from Jesus then a question from the woman.
It brought about some questions (v.11)?
Gift from God, who are you that you say you can give a gift from God
How are you going to draw, you have no bucket? (expand)
Where does this living water come from?
Are you greater than our father Jacob?
(Insert I’ve got a question slide here used before)
(Transition) When you think about a gift from God, outside of the gift of Jesus, forgiveness of sins and the Holy Spirit what do you think of?

Jesus describes effects of living water

Cause and effect, have you heard of that before? Everything has a cause and an effect. Jesus tells of the cause and effect of the gift given by God in this section.
Can you give an example of cause and effect?
John 4:13–14 NKJV
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Think for a minute, what was the cause of the effect that we are looking at?
God is the cause, Jesus is the instrument.
Who is effected by the cause?
Those who drink of the water Jesus is offering.
What is the effect of those who drink the living water given?
The water will become living water in them and will flow from them.
How does the living water flow?
What water is Jesus speaking of that will leave you thirsty again?
With the World it will not be satisfied
The living water will satisfy eternally
It is free, no cost to you
Her response was give it to me! - but the problem was she still was thinking literal not spiritual. Her spiritual eyes were not yet open.

Personal evangelism - by Jesus example

We now get to the “so that” section, the, what we have learned reviewed so we can apply it.
Look for opportunities
Open dialogue using common interest
Don’t go to fast, allow things to develop
Watch your words and your actions for they can open up for questions
Don’t give answers, be willing to help them to find, learn answers.
To this point the woman is still thinking literal as many people do, but she is ready to start thinking, asking spiritual soon. So will those who talk with.
Will end with a verse in which we will pick up next week.
John 4:15 NASB95
15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.”
She wanted more and I hope you leave tonight wanting more and want to come back next week and learn more about personal evangelism by Jesus example.
