Title - Discrimination
Series - Bible Answers on Social Issues
The Problem
The Problem
Discrimination is one of the most heated issue today.
discrimination is applied to race, social status and gender
discrimination results in injustice, maltreatment, and abuses
Discrimination has become a purely negative thing, and is applied to practically all forms of differentiation and distinction.
in short - to discriminate is wrong, period;
Discrimination is mostly defined as -
Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (Eleventh Edition) Discrimination
3 a: the act, practice, or an instance of discriminating categorically rather than individually
b: prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatment 〈racial discrimination〉 synonym see DISCERNMENT—dis•crim•i•na•tion•al \-shnəl, -shə-nəl\ adjective
the verb form is defined as -
to make a difference in treatment or favor on a basis other than individual merit 〈discriminate in favor of your friends〉 〈discriminate against a certain nationality〉
Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (Eleventh Edition) Discrimination
prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatment
based on - color of the skin, race/nationality, gender, wealth/social standing
But there is a positive definition of the word discriminate -
1 a: to mark or perceive the distinguishing or peculiar features of
b: DISTINGUISH, DIFFERENTIATE 〈discriminate hundreds of colors〉
2: to distinguish by discerning or exposing differences especially: to distinguish from another like object verb intransitive
the Latin origin discrimen means ‘distinction’; from discernere, “to distinguish between”
There is no English word discriminate in the Bible, but there is the equivalent ‘discern, discernment’ and ‘distinguish’;
The Key Point
The Key Point
the Bible does speak out against discrimination that leads to injustice and abuse
but the Bible also teaches us how discrimination/distinguishing becomes beneficial.
Discrimination in O.T. times

Distinction between Sethites and Cainites
Distinction between Sethites and Cainites
God separated Cain from Adam’s family, and a separate Cainite genealogy was created
Genesis 4.16-24
1 Adam, Seth, Enosh,
2 Cainan, Mahalalel, Jared,
3 Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech,
4 Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Cain was included in Adam’s race or family
Genesis 6 mentioned about sons of God and daughters of men intermarrying
1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,
2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
3 And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
some argue the these “sons of God” were angels who took human form
Discrimination in the time of the Patriarchs
Discrimination in the time of the Patriarchs
Abraham did not want Isaac to marry from his neighbors
2 So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please, put your hand under my thigh,
3 and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;
4 but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”
Isaac and Rebekah did not like Esau’s marriages
34 When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.
35 And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.
46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”
God separated Israel as nation for Him
4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.
5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.
6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
6 “For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.
Israel’s exclusive covenant with God became an excuse for Israel’s discrimanatin and prejudicial behavior against the Gentiles -
they called the Gentiles pigs
Nevertheless, God allowed certain Gentiles to become part of Israel’s blessing

Discrimination in the N.T.
Discrimination in the N.T.
The Jews were very legalistic in making a distinction between Jew and Gentile, holy and ‘sinner’, etc.
Jesus’s ministry showed a radical change in behavior towards race, gender and social standing
Jesus dined with sinners
Jesus received sinners into his tutorship
Jesus recognized and praised the faith of Gentiles
Jesus sent his disciples to the world!
preach the gospel to every creature
make disciples of all nations
Discrimination in the Grace Dispensation
Discrimination in the Grace Dispensation
the gospel is offered to all nations
the gospel makes Jews and Gentiles one in Christ
11 Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh—who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands—
12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,
15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace,
16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.
the promised Holy Spirit brings all believers on the same level in Christ
12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,
10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,
11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.
Where the egalitarians got it wrong
Where the egalitarians got it wrong
egalitarianism - belief in human equality especially with respect to social, political, and economic rights and privileges
who are the egalitarians
those who believe that women have a right to the same privileges as the men
those who believe that men, women, and gay have the right to become church leaders
those who believe that men and women are equal in authority at home
Galatians 3.28 does not apply to men and women roles
because the Bible makes distinction between men’s and women’s roles
husbands love your wives…wives submit to your husbands…
the head of the woman is the man
because the gospel does not abolish the distinction between men and women
yes, the gospel does make no more distinction between Jew and Gentiles
Discrimination still applies to certain things
between believers and nonbelievers - 2 Cor 6.14-17
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.”
17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”
between holy and unholy
8 Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying:
9 “Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations,
10 that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean,
11 and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them by the hand of Moses.”
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
between idols and the true God
19 What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything?
20 Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.
21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.
22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
between the works of darkness and the fruit of the spirit
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.
13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light.
14 Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.”
between a person living in sin and a person who was fall into and repents
11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.
12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside?
13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.”
1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
What does Galatians 3.28-29 mean, if not equality of men and women?
What does Galatians 3.28-29 mean, if not equality of men and women?
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
all are “sons” - meaning men and women are all “sons”
sonship - in Paul’s time has greater privileges than that of daughters
In Christ - all men and women have equal privileges and blessings, as if they are all “sons”
27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
baptism of the Holy Spirit puts us on the same level
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
“one” - sons
29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
heirs - because you are sons
only the sons become heirs
Conclusion
Conclusion
rejoice in the truth that we are all One in Christ -
we are all sons of God
we are all “heirs” Abraham
we are all beneficiaries of God’s blessings
