Mentoring God’s sons
Our subject is the Holy Spirit.
This evening we will begin with what the Holy Spirit is NOT!
The Holy Spirit is not the second blessing. It is not a holy roller trip that propels a believer to speak in incoherent tongues, run up and down isles and bark like dogs.
We do not equate the spirit with some off the wall ecstatic emotionalism.
Such has done more damage to the all-important subject and doctrine of the holy Spirit to the point where Churches do not teach about the spirit in fear that they will have placed upon the stigma of being a Charismatic.
Secondly it has caused many to ignore the holy spirit who is our mentor and our teacher and without the guidance of the Holy spirit we not only are living the spiritual life we have none to live.
The one thing that one might ask someone in the charismatic movement is
Can one be certain of one’s salvation?
Can one lose their salvation?
The Charismatic movement seeks some experiential evidence over and above the Word of God, the promises in God’s word that one might know that he is saved.
When John says
“that might know that you are saved” the evidence is not that you speak in tongues or have received a second blessing.
So now that we have determined what the Holy spirit is not then let us remember that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. He is God that indwells every church age believer at the point that one is born again.
John 14:16–18 (NASB95) — 16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to
John 16:7 (NASB95) — 7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
Acts 1:8 (NASB95) — 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
Acts 2:1–4 (NASB95) — 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
Paul tells the Corinthian believers
1 Corinthians 6:19 (NASB95) — 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
This receiving of the Holy Spirit is unique to the church age. In the previous age only, a few were said to filled with he spirit on a temporary basis. The best and the worst believer has with a mentor and that is the Holy spirit of God.
The Born again believer at the point of being born again has all the Holy Spirit that he is going to receive. No more and no less.
The spirit is at work in the life of the believer, but the work of the holy spirit can be suppressed by the negative volition of the believer. We will cover that when we get back to 1 Thessalonians 5:19
We began Sunday with 1 Kings 3:6-9. It is the prayer of king Solomon recognizing the awesome responsibility that has been laid upon him and is own inability to even know how to be king.
King Solomons prayer
1 Kings 3:6–9 (NASB95) — 6 Then Solomon said, “You have shown great lovingkindness to Your servant David my father, according as he walked before You in truth and righteousness and uprightness of heart toward You; and You have reserved for him this great lovingkindness, that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 “Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 “Your servant is in the midst of Your people which You have chosen, a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. 9 “So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
You and I as born again believers have entered into he Royal family of God.
Our destiny is being a part of those who God is going to bring into Glory.
Hebrews 2:10–13 (NASB95) — 10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings. 11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying, “I will proclaim Your name to My brethren, In the midst of the congregation I will sing Your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put My trust in Him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children whom God has given Me.”
Yes I am as a son of God part of a Divine dynasty.
Lets talk about that dynasty and what it means to be a son
At the point that we enter into the Christian life we enter into God’s training program to be coheirs with the Son.
As the bride of the last Adam, we are the bride that fulfills the coheirship of Genesis 1:1
Genesis 1:27–28 (NASB95) — 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Who is the female in this case, that would be the bride the Church age believer?
We are also Adopted in the style of Roman adoption.
In the time of the Caesars, and family rule, the predecessor would naturally be the Son. However, because of the ruler’s heart for the empire he may by pass the son and adopt and heir. That one would have all the rights and privileges of a natural born son.
As Born-again believers we have been adopted into the royal family of God
Ephesians 1:3–5 (NASB95) — 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,
Romans 8:14–17 (NASB95) — 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
It is those in God’s family who he calls sons are those who will rule with Him within the family dynasty.
Pretty exciting, Huh?
Then there are the direct quotes from the bible
Revelation 2:26–29 (NASB95) — 26 ‘He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations; 27 and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to pieces, as I also have received authority from My Father; 28 and I will give him the morning star. 29 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
Psalm 2:8 (NASB95) — 8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.
This is in reference to Lord Jesus Christ who will rule but those in Christ will be Co heirs with the Christ
Revelation 3:21 (NASB95) — 21 ‘He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
Revelation 20:4 (NASB95) — 4 Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
Matthew 19:29–30 (NASB95) — 29 “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life. 30 “But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.
There are Crowns that are distributed as rewards.
2 Timothy 4:8 (NASB95) — 8 in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.
Let us not forget our position over the angels.
1 Corinthians 6:3 (NASB95) — 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life?
Sons of the king, robes crowns thrones all are related to rulership functions.
Sometimes as do you feel like a low man or woman unnoticed, unappreciated, alone. Fret not. You are very much noticed by the most important one to be noticed by.
You are in the training program in this life.
We are Being tested and tried and being groomed for Position of rulership with the Lord.
What do any of us know about what it is to rule. Yes we need a trainer and out trainer is the third person of the Godhead himself and that is the Holy Spirit of God.
There is in this life a spiritual life which is not option but an imperative. The Lord is looking for those to rule with him not napios believers but Mature warrior kings.
Who has the natural talent that will carry them over to qualify to rule with Christ.
Who has the power to overcome the evil one?
Who knows the mind of Christ that we should instruct him?
It is all about the holy Spirit that is in operation in the believer who learns to malleable to the dictates of the spirit.
Success in the spiritual life and meeting the objective that God has set for each of us is through the power of the spirit and God’s word.
Ignore either and you will be watching others from the side line in eternity who yielded their lives over to these two power systems. God’s word and the Holy Spirit
Sunday we will learn about the ministries of God the Holy Spriit.
