Some, many, colleges will offer the opportunity to audit a class. this means that you can sit in on the class and get the information without being accountable for passing the test or getting credit for the class. You don’t pay as much but you don’t get credit for it either.
there are those Christians that are disciples for audit only. just for the information only. they do not hold themselves accountable to keep the information or pass the tests and get credit for it.
they are hearers only but not doers.
when it comes to discipleship...
What kind of student are you?
Matthew 5:1 (NASB95) — 1 When Jesus saw (beheld)the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.
Jesus beheld the multitude that had followed and who was seeking him out. What were they seeking Jesus for? Not all were believers, were they? Who was willing to part from that crowd and follow Jesus up on the mountain?
It would be his disciples learners, seekers of the Kingdom.
ὄρος may not be mountains that we think but can be related to a high elevation compared to the lower valley surrounding it.
The Light and high elevation is the opening the mind and receiving revelation, that which is not of this world but is heaven sent. that which Jesus is about to teach is concerning the kingdom from heaven will be taught in the light of a relationship with the King who will be placed upon High.
Psalm 2:6 (NASB95) — 6 “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”
A mountain was a special place.
It was a mountain the Moses ascended to have fellowship with God.
It was a mountain that they Lord spoke from which shook the ground and roared with lightning and thunder. (Exodus 19)
It was a special place for the Lord as he would be found in the mountains to find solitude.
It was a mountain that another sermon would be given on the mount of Olives.
It was on the mount where Jesus was transfigured before Peter James and John.
It was on the mount where Jesus will win the victory.
As we mentioned yesterday in eastern thought mountains were the place of the god’s. and here was the invitation from Yahweh to break out of the crowds and to come up the hill to learn that which those remaining with the crowds will not receive.
Those on the lower plain will continue to think in the same old pattern of thought, same old-world view but those who would ascend up the mountain and come to where Jesus is will receive a vision into the kingdom.
Something more than teaching is taking place though. What is taking place is the presentation of the future rule of the kingdom.
The King of Kings the Lord of Lords presents to the multitude from all over the 12 tribes of Israel their future kings.
Luke 6:12–16 (NASB95) — 12 It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
And then Jesus after choosing the 12 begins the great pronouncement and teaching of the Kingdom to come. The Kingdom that John the Baptist was so vocal about.
He descends to a level place where the learners could assemble.
Luke 6:17 (NASB95) — 17 Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon,
There are two categories of Disciples that were present.
The 12 Disciples just chosen which will be the inner core group. They will receive special revelation, due to their closeness to the Teacher they will receive far more than the average learner.
There would be all who would follow the teachings of Jesus. They started out as many but would fall away as Jesus neared the cross.
John 6:59–71 (NASB95) — 59 These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum. 60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this said, “This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble? 62 “What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? 63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 “But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.” 66 As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” 68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. 69 “We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?” 71 Now He meant Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray Him.
The disciples probably numbered in the thousands. But when Jesus arrives at the cross even with his inner core would be dispersed, Jesus will be left alone.
It is apparent that in the last days we are seeing the falling away once again before another great event in history the return of our savior. we see in our day that many are growing weary, they seem to be giving up hope of the Lord’s return.
Where are the thousands that are coming to the Lord as it was when the Church age began? It seems almost that evangelism is a thing of the past.
I say this as a warning first to myself and warning to you.
Hang on. Hang on to the hope. Do not grow weary of well doing. Do not come so close only to break away and give up what you have gained.
Psalm 30:5 (NASB95) — 5 For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning.
Jesus had assembled his inner corps of disciples. The twelve. God breathed on them His spirit. (John 20:22) they became empowered to heal and run out demons and to proclaim the Kingdom.
Coming down from the mountain was like a presentation to the crowd that was from all of Israel. The presentation of the those that will one day rule over all of Israel.
Matthew 19:28–30 (NASB95) — 28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life. 30 “But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.
Eleven of these twelve will fill the bill. Eleven will follow Jesus in his regeneration. Eleven of these twelve will become the last one types and as a result eleven of these twelve will receive thrones.
The twelfth sought gain in this world. The twelfth became impatient and greedy seeking his own agenda. The twelfth would lose out and lose out big. That twelfth being Judas.
Judas would receive no crown or throne, but the Apostle Paul, who after responding to the voice of the Lord gave up his position and his reputation becoming a fool for Christ, giving up everything will be placed on the twelfth throne.
Jesus descends from the mountain with those that will one day rule over the tribes of Israel
There is coming the event in the future where Jesus is going to return with those who will rule the nations.
Revelation 19:11–16 (NASB95) — 11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. 13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. 15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
Revelation 2:25–27 (NASB95) — 25 ‘Nevertheless what you have, hold fast until I come. 26 ‘He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations; 27 and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to pieces, as I also have received authority from My Father;
Revelation 20:4 (NASB95) — 4 Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
I do not hold to the idea that every born again believe will be presented a crown or rule with Christ in eternity. I do not believe even those who are hustling for Christ will be among those chosen. I believe what Jesus said
Matthew 22:14 (NASB95) — 14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
While we are all elected in Christ redeemed by the blood of Christ. That from that elect there are those few that will be Christ’s inner circle. His rulership council. It is those who persevered. It is those who overcame. It is those who ran the race and fought the good fight of faith who will receive the crown of righteousness.
It is those who were the last one types in their life to become the first one types with the coming of the Lord.
Receiving Christ is just a step through the door when we first trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life.
But who will continue the journey of salvation abandoning all else to pursue the glory of God His kingdom his righteousness? Those that will give it all even their own lives to glorify God and receive the rite to rule with His son forever.
Which type of Disciple are you?
