Introduction
Introduction
I was a typical teenager. I longed for freedom from my parents. Do you remember what that felt like. I remember the day I got my drivers license. My parents let me take the car by myself to the store for the first time. What freedom that was, being able to go where I wanted to go without having to ask for a ride. I loved being able to drive.
When we are kids we all long for that freedom. In fact humans always long to be free. But in this fallen world we are slaves....Slaves to sin. The desires of the world entrap us and we are bound by them. Think about the greedy person who is always wanting more, who is never satisfied with what they have. They work harder, they fight, they lie, they cheat, they steal. Anything they can to have more. Or how about the person that is never content with their life. They see what other people have and want that.
But we do not have to live as slaves anymore. Because we are .........
We are free in Christ
We are free in Christ
We are free from our past sins
Christ’s sacrifice has paid the price for our sins
Once we accept Christ we will never be punished for our past sins
We are free from our sin nature
Not only are we freed from our past sins. Christ offers us a way out of our in-bread sin nature
Sin is a part of who we are
We are born sinners
We are not born as God would have us.
Christ’s sacrifice allows us to escape the sin nature we are born into
Because of Adam all are subject to sin
Jesus sends us the H.S. so we no longer have to live in the sin nature we were born in.
We are free to choose our future
We are given free will
We are not God’s puppets
We are offered freedom in Christ.
Use your freedom wisely
Use your freedom wisely
We have two option Flesh or Spirit
For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
Flesh
When we live by the flesh we choose worldly desires
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
When we choose these we choose eternal separation from God
Sin separates us
The Flesh Separates us
Spirit
When we live by the Spirit we are given heavenly desires
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
These are the attributes we we demonstrate when we choose the Spirit
The Spirit offers us eternal relationship
Freely love one another
Freely love one another
The entire law is fulfilled by loving one another.
613 commandments
All can be fulfilled by simply loving one another.
The acts of flesh are all selfish
The fruits of the Spirit are all self sacrificial.
So love and show love to one another
This is how the law is fulfilled
