Sermon Tone Analysis

John 20:24–25 (ESV)

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.

So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.”

But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

Something About Doubt

Doubt is the questioning of someone’s or something’s integrity.

Some of the things we doubt:

Extended Car Warranty scams

Work place rumors

Politicians

Doubting Thomas

Thomas was skeptical of the remaining 10 disciples claim that they had seen the risen Jesus.

All the disciples doubted the testimony of Mary when she claimed Christ had arose from the dead.

Peter was skeptical even after seeing the empty tomb.

Hindered By Doubt

Doubt will hinder one’s faith, when they begin to question the validity of God’s Word and even His existence.

Adam’s and Eve’s relationship with the Lord was hindered when they doubted God’s Word, failed to heed His warning, and ate of the forbidden fruit.

Genesis 3:1–7 (ESV)

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.

And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

Conclusion

Doubt is natural but can hinder one’s relationship with the Lord when doubts God’s Word, God’s integrity, and God’s existance.
