OPENING
OPENING
We are studying through the book of Romans. We’re calling it “Christianity 101: Lessons From Romans.” The book of Romans was originally a letter or epistle written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Rome.
Romans is the clearest and most detailed presentation of the Gospel in all of the bible. And it has brought many to faith in Christ, including some important church fathers.
Augustine came to faith in Christ after reading Romans 13.
Martin Luther, who was the father of the Protestant Reformation, came to faith in Christ after reading Romans 1:17.
John Wesley, who started the Methodist movement, was saved after hearing Martin Luther’s commentary on Romans being read.
Romans has been called:
“The most profound work in existence” (Samuel Coleridge).
“The cathedral of the Christian faith” (Frederick Godet).
“The absolute epitome of the gospel” (Martin Luther).
Romans reveals, not only what the Gospel is, but what it means to live it out in our everyday lives. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is often referred to as “Good News.” It is certainly good news, but it goes much further that than. It is not just good news, it is the best news ever!
SCRIPTURE
SCRIPTURE
14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise.
15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
MESSAGE
MESSAGE
Here at the beginning of chapter 1, Paul gives a condensed summary of the Gospel. This morning, I want to give you 7 truths about the Gospel frI’m this section of scripture.
The Gospel is From God
1 Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God 2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures,
God had a plan from before the beginning.
God knew that mankind would fall into sin and would need a way of forgiveness and salvation.
God loved us so much that He made a way that we could be redeemed from our sinful condition and adopted into His family.
The Gospel is About Jesus Christ
3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4 and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
The Gospel is all about Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the God-man.
He is the descendant of King David according to the flesh.
But He is the Eternal Son of God by the Spirit as evidenced by His resurrection from the dead.
Jesus Christ is the:
Only Begotten,
Sinless,
Perfectly righteous,
Spotless,
Lamb of God,
Who takes away the sin of the world!
The Gospel Produces Obedience
5 Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,
The Gospel is the gift of grace.
Notice that the purpose of the Gospel is not primarily to lead us to obedience to the law.
We have received the grace of the Gospel for obedience to the faith.
No one can be saved by obeying the law, because no one can perfectly obey the law.
We are saved by grace through faith.
Once we are saved, we begin living a life of obedience to God’s will, not because we have to earn our salvation, but because the Holy Spirit that lives in us motivates us to want to serve Him, love him, and be more like Him.
The Gospel is For Everyone
5 Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,
Paul declares that the Gospel is for “all nations.”
There is no one excluded.
Jesus Christ came to earth, died on a cross, and was raised from the dead to provide the power of the Gospel to whosoever will.
14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise.
Paul considered himself a debtor to preach the Gospel to everyone.
God has given us the Gospel to share it with others.
We are debtors to the Gospel.
The Gospel is the Power of God
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
Paul was not ashamed of the Gospel, because he understood that the Gospel had the power to change people’s lives.
The Gospel is not just information, it is power.
We might not be ashamed to be a Christian, but are we ashamed to share the Gospel?
How many times have we share the Gospel this week?
Let’s not be ashamed to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Gospel Produces Righteousness
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
The manifestation of the Gospel in a person’s life produces righteousness.
Not our own righteousness, but the righteousness of God.
It is from faith to faith.
In other words, it begins with faith, and it is maintained by faith.
“It is by faith from beginning to end.”

Brian Cole - From Satanist to Pastor
Brian spent over 30 years in the occult and satanism. He grew up in a Christian church, but turned to the occult and satanism after being bullied as a child and rebelling because of an abusive father. He found some new friends as an 11 year old who introduced him to satanism. He soon progressed deeper and deeper into the occult. He even got a tattoo of a cross on the bottom of his foot so that he could stomp on God whenever he walked. After Brian became an adult, he spent time in and out of prison. At the age of 44, he found himself in prison again. One night, when he returned to his jail cell, mysteriously, there was a book on the floor. It was Lee Strobel’s “The Case For Christ.” Lee Strobel was a former atheist that set out to prove Christianity to be a lie. Instead, Strobel proved Christianity is the truth and became a believer himself. Brian read the book and decided that he could no longer deny that Jesus existed and the Gospel was the truth. The Gospel transformed Brian’s life and he is now a pastor at The Oaks Church in Wisconsin. In a recent interview Brian said that the Gospel “has set me free in so many ways I can’t even explain it.”
