Wait on the Lord

We, as a society, do not like to be told to wait. We have become accustom to getting things when we want them, as soon as we want them.
Fast food
Microwaves
TV- no commercials
Streaming series- dont wait a week for the next episode
We are an impatient society.
We are told to wait on the Lord, and we struggle with that.
Abraham and Sara, had to wait on the Lord, they became impatient
The nation of Israel were waiting on Moses, they became impatient
We are waiting on the Lord, and we become impatient.
We want to do things our way, get instant gratification.
We need to do things the Lord’s way and wait for our eternal gratification.
So how do we “wait on the Lord”
I believe it means, to hope, to anticipate, and to trust.
Because of our trust in God, we have a hope that the world doesn’t have, and because of our trust and hope, we live in anticipation of God’s promises. That promise of an eternal home with Him, a home beyond this world.
To wait on the Lord, is to live everyday filled with that hope and trust, anticipating His coming.
Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
2 Corinthians 4:18 ESV
as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
We don’t look to the world for fulfillment, but to God.
The things of this world can only provide a temporary satisfaction. God’s satisfaction is eternal!
Romans 12:12 ESV
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
Things aren’t always going to be smooth and comfortable here in this life, but our hope in not in this life or this world.
Romans 15:4 ESV
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
We should read scripture, and be encouraged by God’s faithfulness through out time. Waiting on the Lord, is about endurance. Faithfully serving Him throughout all and any circumstance.

Stephen, Paul, and the other apostles
Psalm 147:11 ESV
but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.
The Lord delights in our hope in Him.
Does that excite you that you can give God pleasure and delight.
In all the things that I have done that would anger or disappoint God, Im excited to think that I can do something that would delight God.
Proverbs 23:18 ESV
Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
There is a future, eternal home for you if you trust in Him. And it will not be cut off, nothing can seperate you from the promise of God.
Sometimes we are discouraged by the world around us. It seems that everyone outside of God is living it up, doing what they want, and getting everything they want.
Psalm 37:34–36 ESV
Wait for the Lord and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off. I have seen a wicked, ruthless man, spreading himself like a green laurel tree. But he passed away, and behold, he was no more; though I sought him, he could not be found.
Whatever joy and satisfaction that they have now is temporary and passing away. For those who wait on the Lord, our joy, peace, satisfaction is eternal!
So, whatever is going on with you this morning, or tomorrow, or next week. Whatever is beating you up and making you feel down or discouraged. Know this God is faithful, God loves you and hasn’t forgot about you.
Wait on the Lord!
Isaiah 40:31 ESV
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Romans 15:13 ESV
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
