Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died. And Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over his face, and said, O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.
And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows. And he took unto him bow and arrows.
And he said to the king of Israel, Put thine hand upon the bow. And he put his hand upon it: and Elisha put his hands upon the king’s hands.
And he said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, The arrow of the Lord’s deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria: for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.
And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed.
And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.
And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities, which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash beat him, and recovered the cities of Israel.
Introduction.
Introduction.
It must have been a strange thing to Joash to hear the Prophet’s rebuke. He thought he did well, but the prophet said, you should have kept striking the ground.
The same’s happened tonight in the Christian church. We have struck the arrow of God’s deliverance; He said it was.
God sent the arrow of deliverance to us. The Arrow of deliverance is the Holy Spirit that’s been sent, shot from the bow of God’s love.
When the eternity to eternity was pulled together by the cord of love, God shot the Arrow of deliverance into the Church on the day of Pentecost. Amen.
And the Church was given in her hands…Hallelujah. The Church was given into her hand the Arrow of God’s deliverance. Amen.
The Holy Spirit will deliver the Church out of any kind of a chaos it could get into. But what does it do with it? They picked up the arrow and they struck three times. That’s a backslidden king.
They struck the arrow once, “Well, we’ll build a church.” That’s all right. “We’ll teach theology.” That’s all right. “We’ll teach psychology and have an organization.” That’s just about as far as you struck. They struck short of many blessings.
And the church tonight…Hear me. The church tonight is still striking short. The church has struck short of the baptism of the Holy Ghost. It struck short of deliverance from sin. It struck short…
Oh, you say, “I belong to church.” Brother, when you got that baptism of the Holy Ghost, it’s takes that old temper out of you. It puts you on a dress and makes you act like a lady. It’ll make you quit your smoking, drinking, lying, stealing, and everything.
Brother, when you’ve got the baptism of the Holy Ghost, it separates you. It delivers you from the things of the world. Amen. It makes you love God. It makes you go to church. It makes you worship Him. It makes you tell your neighbor about it. It makes you live above sin. Hallelujah.
But the modern church has struck short of it. Oh, they just struck…Say, “We got a church. We got a good teacher. We got theology.” That’s about as much as you know about. Every promise in the Book is mine, every chapter, every verse, every line. Hallelujah.
God sent the baptism of the Holy Ghost and put it into the hands of the Church, the Arrow of God’s deliverance to deliver from sickness, from sin, from worry, from trouble, from worldliness, from everything else. But we’ve struck short of it. Amen. 56-0801 - The Arrow Of God's Deliverance Shot From A Bow
The Bible speaks of hope as an expectation.
My soul, wait thou only upon God; For my expectation is from him.
Lexham Theological Wordbook תִּקְוָה
תִּקְוָה (tiqwâ). n. fem. hope, expectation. Indicates the hope which a person exercises, the object for which one hopes, or the basis on which one hopes.
This term is related to the verb קָוָה (qāwâ, “to wait”) and is used in the OT to express the expected outcome at the end of a period of waiting. In its abstract sense, tiqwâ refers to the hope which a person exercises with regard to future possibilities (Job 5:16; Psa 62:6) or the basis on which this hope is exercised (Job 4:6). Concretely, tiqwâ may refer to the object for which one hopes (Job 6:8; Ezek 37:11). Both individuals (Job 6:8; Psa 71:5) and groups (Jer 31:17; Ezek 37:11) may possess hope.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
In the New Testament the Word for Expectation is “Hope”.
This is not the same as our modern word for hope. (I “hope” it rains)
And hope, what a beautiful thing hope is. Little, timid hope, lovely and sweet as she is, yet, she’s the greatest enemy faith has. That’s right. The greatest enemy faith’s got is hope. ’Cause a person becomes so hopeful till they leave away from faith.
Now, hope will agree with the Bible. Hope will say, “It’s True.” Hope will say, “I believe every bit of It. I believe that that’s the Word of God. And I believe that God will keep His promise.” Hope believes all of that. But hope then says, “Now, I believe that God will heal, but look at my condition.”
Now, faith don’t look at that. Faith comes around, “I don’t care nothing about conditions. God said so, and it’s mine.” You see? Faith’s burly. As I once said, “Faith has hair on the chest.
When it stands up and pulls its big muscles out, everything else vanishes away.” Just takes—flies away. When faith really takes a hold, nothing else stands. 54-0320 - Faith Cometh By Hearing
We expect God to keep His Word.
Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
When something has been revealed to you, expect it to happen!
And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
But “expectancy,” that’s a great thing, to expect something. You usually get what you expect. Some people come to the meeting and say, “Well, I didn’t expect to get anything out of it.” Well, they won’t. But those who expect to get something, God will give them their expectations, if they’re doing it reverently and in the fear of God.
Now, always to find out something first is to find whether it’s the will of God or not. And then if it’s the will of God, then your objective to it, and then your motive in doing it. If it’s the will of God, and your objective is right, and your motive is right, it’s got to happen. There’s just no way to keep it from happening. 61-0308 - Expectations
Every man that ever believed in God, or heard God’s voice, expected Him to do something.
61-0308 - Expectations
Now, if you can set right where you are now and so consecrate yourselves to God and expect God to do something, hear the Voice of God whisper down in your heart, “You don’t have to wait for a prayer card tomorrow night. This is the time I’m going to heal you.” That’s all. It’s settled. There’d be nothing be able to shake you from that.
If you never received the Holy Spirit, and you say, “Lord, I’ve sought the Holy Spirit for years, but I just heard a Voice tell me I’m going to get It right tonight,” That settles it. That’s it. You’ll be so expecting it; it’ll have to happen. 61-0308 - Expectations
How do we know that Noah expected it to rain?
He persevered to build the ark.
How do we know that Abraham expected a child? He persevered through all obstacles for 25 years.
Now, perseverance, to be persistent, to try to make a goal, trying to, you’ve got your mind set on something, and you’re persistent in it because you believe it’s the thing that you want, and you believe you can get it. 62-0218 - Perseverance
Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.
And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.
Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
Well, no matter if she was a Greek, she was still persistent. She had perseverance. Then somebody might’ve come up with this old proverb, you know (They still have it today.): “The days of miracles is past. There is no such a thing.”
But no matter how many hollered at her, “The days of miracles is past,” she still was persistent. That might have been for them who believed it, but not for her. Something had already happened inside that let her know that it wasn’t past.
And until you get past that barrier, you’ll never do no good. You’ve got to come a past that barrier: “God was, but isn’t now.” He’s still God if He ever was God. If He isn’t the same God today, He never was God. See? That’s it. It’s man lost his faith, not God lost His power, God went back on His promise. It’s man went back on the promise to believe.
She was still perseverant. If the days of miracles was past for all of them, it wasn’t for her. Why? She’d struck a past that sound barrier. She got a hold of something. Something had struck her. 62-0608 - Perseverance
So when she worshipped Him and said, “Lord, help me,” Jesus said, “But you know, it’s not meet for Me to take the children’s bread and cast it to you dogs.” Oh, my. If that would’ve been a modern Pentecostal, she’d have turned that little nose up and said, “I’ll never go to a meeting like that again.”
Why? They don’t have the hope that she had. That’s right. She had the hope. She had heard, and faith had caught it. She had a reason; she had a need. And she just wasn’t going to turn loose. That’s right. I like that. Yes, sir. 62-0608 - Perseverance
Her perseverance showed her expectation. She had a hope they didn’t have.
King Joash didn’t have that kind of hope, so he took the arrow of God’s deliverance, shot by the bow of love, and struck three times.
And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
It was only to a certain group. If you were a Jew, you were God’s elect, but now the elect will be known by their perseverance.
