Overview and intro
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
As we trust in him.
Do you have peace? so many things in our life going on that it is hard to hold on to peace. So many things to worry about. So many local and global reports of trouble on the horizon. Because we don’t have control over most things, we can often find ourselves filled with fear and anxiety. with all that going on how do we find real lasting peace?
In a devotional by Kurt Selles I came across this week he says:
True peace comes from the Holy Spirit. Above all, the peace of being made right with God comes by Jesus’ work of salvation, applied to us through the work of the Holy Spirit. Being right with God provides eternal peace.
This is the peace of the Holy Spirit that brings well-being, contentment, and wholeness, whatever the circumstances.
We can not produce this kind of spiritual peace on our own. We can, however, ask the Spirit today to continue working in our hearts to grow the fruit of peace that allows us to live in the fullness of life. And we can be assured that the Spirit will give us “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding” and which guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
This is what Jesus wanted all of his disciples to know about the Holy Spirit:
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
peace - in provision, in persecution
As we come around the communion table, we re-examine our lives. we confess to any area in our life that we have taken back control and not asked Jesus to lead us in. The areas where we are afraid. Where our hearts are troubled. Where we take our eyes off Jesus.
Take the elements
For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.
But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—
if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
Reflection Question:
What area’s in your life do you need to be a servant in and Jesus back control?
Ask Jesus for his peace to pour over you. To pour over, from you, into the lives of those around you so that they may see Jesus in you.
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
