1 Corinthians 11:23–33 KJV 1900
For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.
Communion: to have in common, association, fellowship, interchange or sharing of thought and emotions, intimate communication, holding things in common, participation, state of being held
Biblically: to have in common or be in association and fellowship with Jesus. Having an interchange or sharing thoughts and emotions with Jesus. An intimate communication with Jesus. Holding all things in common with Jesus. Participating with Jesus. The state of being held by Jesus.
Literal Biblical: fresh start, reset (in the above things)
The custom of Passover had been going on since they had left Egypt.
Parallels are amazing.
Let’s look at the bread...
Called Matzah - bread that was not given enough time to rise, had no yeast in it.
When it came time for them to leave Egypt, it was sudden and they simply stuffed their bread into travel bags and left.
When they arrived at the first camp, they found that the sun had cooked the bread into cracker-like loaves that would become a centerpiece to their new lives.
In the 7 day celebration of Passover the first meal is called Seder = order!
Many things on the table
Glass of wine for Elijah
Maror, bitter herbs - symbolizing bitterness of slavery
Charoset, sweet mixture of fruits and nuts
Karpas, green vegetables
Zeroa, roasted lamb bone
Beitzah, hard boiled egg
Sit down to eat and...
Jesus would sit down at this traditional supper, break a piece of bread into 3 pieces, wrap middle piece in a piece of cloth and hid...
..after the meal they would send the children to find it and whomever found it would receive a gift
Jewish tradition teaches the three pieces represented Abraham, Issac and Jacob
Jesus would pick up that middle piece and say “this is my body”
Sonship, 6 office of the son (son of man, son of Abraham, son of God, Son of David) - 6 times he was pierced, 6 hours he hung on the cross
6 is the number of what?
Man!
Matzah - unleavened bread (leaven is a type of sin)
The bread had grill marks and pierce marks where it was stabbed to be turned over
Whip marks and pierce marks, broken
Then he would be wrapped and hid in a tomb
BUT if you look, you can find him,
Acts 17:27 KJV 1900
That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
What was the Lord’s Supper all about?
Two pieces of understanding:
Bread
Favor of God
Physical healing
Blood
Emotional healing
Spiritual healing
Favor
Psalm 105:37 KJV 1900
He brought them forth also with silver and gold: And there was not one feeble person among their tribes.
David thought he was talking about history…
Silver and gold - favor on jobs, in community
Exodus 12:35–36 KJV 1900
And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: And the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.
Bread -
Favor and physical healing
Let a person examine himself
Where do I hurt? What body part is not working?
Blood -
Emotional and spiritual healing
Where do I hurt emotionally?
What phycological wounds do I have?
Where do I suffer spiritually?
What sin is in my life?
What addictions am I struggling with?
Who should take communion?
Everyone filled with the Holy Ghost.
Everyone with a repented, sincere heart!
We focus on the negative…
1 Corinthians 11:28–32 ESV
Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
What’s the opposite?
When we examine ourselves for favor, sickness, emotional hurts and sins (repenting where needed) - In judging ourselves, God will not have to judge us!
Here’s what we will be doing:
Repentance
Pass out cups containing grape juice and unleavened bread
Will partake together on command
Read scripture, partake
Bread
Juice
Pray
Prayer, repentance
Pass out cups/bread
