High / Low view of God
High / Low view of God
If you will not make sure that it is compatible with what the bible says about God, you are going to give up.
4 people whose view of God is apparent in their life
Colossians 4: 14-18 “Luke the beloved physician greets you, as does Demas. Give my greetings to the brothers at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house. And when this letter has been read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea. And say to Archippus, “See that you fulfill the ministry that you have received in the Lord.” I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.”
Luke wrote more of the New Testament, by word count, than any other person including Paul. And Luke was a gentile!
Luke was a physician. He had extensive knowledge of the human body. He wrote the Gospel of Luke with great detail.
it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.
Point 1: Utilize your skills for ministry
Point 1: Utilize your skills for ministry
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
we need to display God’s glory and character displayed in our work
For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
2 Timothy was after Colossians
Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
Would you want God’s word describing you as someone who has deserted the faith because you were in love with the world?
Point 2: Don’t get distracted by a Love for this age (v14b)
Point 2: Don’t get distracted by a Love for this age (v14b)
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
There is something appealing even to those people, when you tell them about a God is attractive to them
As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
The world is trying to distract us with money, material wealth, etc and the love of this age.
Archippus - was Philemon’s son - he was a committed solider in Christ
and Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house:
Point 3: Stay focused on God’s mission
Point 3: Stay focused on God’s mission
Go make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and holy Spirit,......
Job = Make Disciples
Title = Solider of Christ
Regularly acquaint yourself with the missing manual — the bible
Stay connected with other missionaries (a person on a mission)
Take Paul’s final words to heart. “I Paul, wrote this in my own hand” Colossians 4:18
I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.
He is putting the signature on the letter.
“Remember my chains ( 2 Timothy 3:12
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
Point 4. Expect a Measure of Suffering (v. 18)
Point 4. Expect a Measure of Suffering (v. 18)
If we have a high view of God we will participate in the mission of God and therefore there will be persecution.
Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.
Colossian 1:2 “To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father.”
Colossians 4:18 “I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.”
Grace to you - ability
Grace with you - you can do it now
1. Write down one observation or application you found particularly helpful from this week’s sermon.
2. Read Genesis 1:26–28 and Genesis 2:15 . What were God’s expectations for Adam concerning his profession? In the same way, what are God’s expectations for you, concerning your own profession? Like Adam, how can you use your profession to accomplish God’s will?
The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
3. Read 1 John 2:15-17 and 2 Timothy 4:8–10 . What are the blessings promised for those who do not run after the world's pleasures and who hold fast to the promise of Christ's return?
Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. Do your best to come to me soon. For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
4. Read 1 Peter 2:9-10 and 2 Timothy 4:7 . Why is keeping the mission of God in focus pivotal in order to persevere? What can you do daily to keep the mission in focus?
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
5. Read Psalm 34:19 and 2 Timothy 3:10–12 . How can you begin preparing for the inevitable suffering that accompanies faithful believers?
You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
