WHO SAID IT QUIZ/GAME:
1. “I came, I saw, I conquered.”
-Julias Caesar
2. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
- Martin Luther King Jr.
3. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
- Franklin D Roosevelt
4. “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

5. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
- Jesus
What Jesus taught was revolutionary to the Jewish people.
The lessons Jesus gives on the Sermon on the Mount are RADICAL.
Some believed Jesus did not believe in the OT and He sets out in this message to let them know not only does He believe in the OT, He is going to completely and perfectly fulfill the Old Testament.
Matthew 5:17–20 KJV 1900
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Thru the Bible Vol. 34: The Gospels (Matthew 1–13) Relationship of the Subjects of the Kingdom to Law

The commandments are not a way of salvation but a means to show you the way to salvation through the acceptance of the work of Jesus Christ.

A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament (διδάσκω)
διδάσκω = to teach; to hold discourse with others in order to instruct them, deliver didactic discourses: “A meaning or Moral to the story for affecting life change.”

Jesus was not presenting a rival system to the Law of Moses and the words of the Prophets, but a true fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets—in contrast with the Pharisees’ traditions. “The Law and the Prophets” refer to the entire Old Testament

Jesus’ fulfillment would extend to the smallest Hebrew letter, the “jot” (lit., yôd), and even to the smallest stroke of a Hebrew letter, the “tittle.” In English a jot would correspond to the dot above the letter “i” (and look like an apostrophe), and a tittle would be seen in the difference between a “P” and an “R”. The small angled line that completes the “R” is like a tittle. These things are important because letters make up words and even a slight change in a letter might change the meaning of a word. Jesus

Jesus Fulfills Perfect Righteousness.

The righteousness they were currently seeking—that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law—was insufficient for entrance into the kingdom Jesus was offering. The

The LAW Shows us our inability to have our own righteousness. Jesus fulfills the LAW and Righteousness for us!!!
Matthew 2. The Misconception about the Word (Matthew 5:18, 19)

Since Christ did not follow the “traditions” of the elders and opposed the teaching of the scribes and Pharisees, the people erroneously concluded that He did not believe or teach the Scriptures. Nothing could be farther from the truth. To emphasize His belief in the Scriptures (which corrected their implied misconception of His view of the Scriptures), Christ spoke three important truths related to Scripture.

Matthew C. Standard of Righteousness (5:17–20)

unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

This is an enormous statement. It would have shocked Jesus’ listeners, because the scribes and Pharisees were considered the ultimate example of righteousness. To the Jewish listener, Jesus’ statement meant that no one could enter heaven. To the average person trying to eke out a living, the Pharisees were the truly holy people. Jesus claimed that even they were not good enough!

FAKE RIGHTEOUSNESS FOCUSES ON THE OUTSIDE.
REAL RIGHTEOUSNESS FOCUSES ON THE HEART.

4 TEACHERS and WHAT THEY SAY:

Some Teach Wrong. 19

They are “least” in the Kingdom of Heaven.
They probably get it right in a lot of the Big Things. PRIMARY. Doctrine.
They break (Loosen or untie) the Small Things. SECONDARY. Principles/application.
They are still “In.” “Least in” the Kingdom.
There are some Christians who get the Bible wrong in a lot of areas, but they are still born again. They still believe the Gospel.
WHO SAID IT: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” ― Mahatma Gandhi Indian Lawyer and Hindu Leader.
Some Teach Wrong. 19

Some Teach Right. 19

These are great teachers who “Do” and “Teach” Accurately.
They dot every "I” and cross every “t”.
They teach the whole counsel of God.
They are “Great” and “In” the Kingdom of Heaven too.
“The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.” ― G.K. Chesterton, What's Wrong with the World
Some Teach Wrong. 19
Some Teach Right. 19

Some Teach Impossible. 20

The Scribes Copied the Law.
The Pharisees taught and elaborated on the Law.
They added teachings called the “Mishnah:”
“Most commonly known is the so-called “sabbath day’s journey” of 2,000 cubits.— somewhat less than 2/3 mi.
It was also counted as Sabbath breaking to look in a mirror fixed to the wall. And also looking even to light a candle. Sadly, these same regulations permitted an egg laid on the Sabbath to be sold to a Gentile. And allowed for a Gentile to be hired to light a candle or a fire.” -BibleAsk
Pharisees are not “In” the Kingdom of Heaven.
Their teaching focused on outside actions only.
BTW: Unless there is a heart change, no outside actions will be perfectly sinless. It is impossible.
Unless a person can exceed Pharisees righteousness, one can’t earn their Kingdom place.

Let’s Play a Review Game: “WHO SAID IT.”

1. WHO SAID: “Be hateful and angry just as long as you don’t actually kill someone?”

Matthew 5:21–26 KJV 1900
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
Anger with no cause is not Christlike.
Calling people names “Fool, empty headed” is not good.
“Be a peacemaker, reconciling wrongs.” - Jesus.

2. WHO SAID: “Have all the lust you want in your head and heart, just be sure you resist physical adultery, sex, or sexual assault?”

Matthew 5:27–30 KJV 1900
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
People eventually act upon their internal lust.
Don’t play with fire. Be careful what you look at and think about.
Lust is in the head before the hands.
Lust is in the brain before the body.
Cycles of hormones including endorphins, dopamine (pleasure), and can start to take control and the brain is no longer in control: ADDICTION. This is why some people want to quit but don’t know how. Their thoughts rewired the biology of the brain. It can be a tough cycle.
Prison inmates: “Many actually have a long-term relationship with pornography—in one study, 80% of murderers said their biggest interest was in reading porn.
Clearly, the science shows the connection between crime and porn, and personal accounts do too.
Ted Bundy, a convicted rapist and serial killer, attested to this stating, “I’ve met a lot of men who were motivated to commit violence just like me and without exception, every one of them was deeply involved with pornography. Without question, without exception, deeply influenced and consumed by addiction to pornography.” -FighttheNewDrug.com
“Stop playing immoral videos in your heart and mind.” - Jesus

3. WHO SAID: “Divorce if you want to; you don’t even need a good reason?”

Matthew 5:31–32 KJV 1900
It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
“You better have a Good reason for divorce."- Jesus.

4. WHO SAID: “Make Your Oaths Count More By Swearing on Important Things?”

Matthew 5:33–37 KJV 1900
Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
“I swear on my mothers grave.”
“I swear on the Bible I’m telling the truth.”
“I Swear to God.”
We hear these “validations” of words often.
“Just have an honest “yes” or “no.”” - Jesus
Having to validate your words for more than simply being Honest is something from the Evil one. (of Evil)

5. WHO SAID: “Get Back At Them! Forgiveness is Overrated?”

Matthew 5:38–42 KJV 1900
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
“Forgive Them, Don’t Get Back At Them.”-Jesus
“Go the extra mile.” -Jesus

6. WHO SAID: “Love the People Who are Good to You and Hate the People Who are Bad to You.”

Matthew 5:43–47 KJV 1900
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
At High School Graduations this year, students and speakers stood up and said: “Be Kind. Look Ahead. Do the Hard Things.” Good advice that is very general in nature. It’s missing the WHY and WHO.
Jesus said
“LOVE OTHERS - Because that is what God’s children do.” - Jesus
----------------------------------------------------
We cant live up to the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees and we can’t live up to the teachings of the OT.
Matthew 5:48 KJV 1900
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
We can’t be completely whole or perfectly righteousness - without Jesus. WE Can Be More Like Jesus.
THIS IS WHY JESUS IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN FULFILL THE OLD TESTAMENT.
NOTICE the PERFECT TEACHER:
Matthew 5:17 KJV 1900
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Because of Christ, YOU Can Live Right.
Galatians 2:20 KJV 1900
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Because of Christ, YOU Can Have Wisdom to live right.
1 Corinthians 1:30 (KJV 1900)
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
Because of Christ, YOU Can Walk By Faith to be right.
Philippians 3:9 KJV 1900
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
One MORE WHO SAID IT: “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” ― C.S. Lewis
